The short answer

Patalkot Gorge Trek: what visitors should know first

Go if you are reasonably fit and want to see Patalkot from the inside. The trek takes four days, with an easy-to-moderate walk along the valley floor but a steep descent and climb out. Not for anyone with knee, heart or breathing problems.

History and context

The story behind Patalkot Gorge Trek

Patalkot's villages were long cut off from the outside world, and the valley was opened to visitors only gradually. MP Tourism launched the Patalkot Gorge Trek as a pilot route with the forest department, following the Doodhi river through the valley.

Why it matters

Why Patalkot Gorge Trek is worth your time

Patalkot is one of the few places in central India where a trek passes through living villages rather than empty forest. The valley's Bharia and Gond communities have kept much of their own way of life, including a deep knowledge of medicinal plants, and walking through with local guides brings income directly to them.

The gorge itself is striking: a horseshoe of rock walls and dense forest about 79 sq km in area, cut by the Doodhi river. The trek has only recently been opened to organised groups, under forest department supervision, so walking it quietly, carrying out all litter and respecting village privacy matters for its future.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The organised trek begins at Chimtipur, a village on the rim of the Patalkot valley, usually reached by a drive of about five hours from Nagpur. After a briefing, the second day drops into the gorge and follows the Doodhi river along the valley floor, a near-flat walk of about 5 km to the first village camp.

The third day is the longest, about 9 km of ups and downs through narrow gorges, past caves, rock formations and stream crossings, with time to visit a tribal village. On the fourth day, about 5 km, the route climbs back out to the cliff edge and the plateau. The gorge is roughly 400 m deep, and some villages on its floor get only a few hours of direct sun.

Nights are spent in tents in or near the villages, with simple vegetarian meals. Wear shoes with good grip for wet rock and shallow river crossings, carry a warm layer for cold nights in winter, and keep your pack light, as offloading is not offered. Itineraries may change, so confirm the route with the operator before you go.
