Why it matters
Why Patalkot Valley Viewpoints (Rated and Chimtipur) is worth your time
The view from the rim is what makes Patalkot memorable for most visitors. From here the scale of the valley becomes clear: a horseshoe of about 79 sq km, closed in by granite and sandstone walls and covered in dense forest, with small villages scattered along the floor.
For older travellers and anyone who should not attempt the steep descent, the viewpoints offer the essential Patalkot experience without risk. They also give a sense of how isolated the valley's Bharia and Gond communities have been, and why their culture and herbal knowledge survived largely untouched for so long.

How to experience it
From Tamia, drive with a local driver to the valley rim. MP Tourism names Rated (spelled Ratedd on its page) and Chimtipur among the main vantage points over the valley, and Dalel as a sunrise point. Each gives a slightly different view of the horseshoe shape, the forested floor and the rock walls.
Come early in the morning, when the air is clearer, or in the late afternoon. In the monsoon, mist often fills the valley and the views come and go. A local guide can point out village clearings on the floor and explain the paths that lead down.
Carry water and a snack, as there are few or no stalls. If some of the group plan to walk down into the valley, the rest can wait at the viewpoint, but agree a clear time to meet.
