The short answer
Modhera Sun Temple: what visitors should know first
Yes, as a half-day trip from Patan. Go in the morning or late afternoon, take a guide, and allow an hour and a half. The site is open and sunny with a few steps, so it suits most older visitors with a hat and some patience.
History and context
The story behind Modhera Sun Temple
The temple was built in the reign of Bhima I, after 1026 to 27 CE, on the bank of the Pushpavati river. The Sabha Mandapa, or dancing hall, was added a little later under Karna I in the third quarter of the eleventh century.
The complex has three parts: the main shrine hall, the assembly hall and the stepped tank. It is a protected monument of national importance and sits on India's tentative UNESCO list, added in 2022.

Why it matters
Why Modhera Sun Temple is worth your time
The Sun Temple at Modhera was built after 1026 to 27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, with the dancing hall added later in the time of Karna I. It is among the finest examples of Maru-Gurjara temple architecture, and one of the few large temples to Surya in India.
It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and was added to India's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage in December 2022. For travellers staying in Patan, it completes the picture of the Chaulukya period: Rani ki Vav shows the water engineering and sculpture of the era, while Modhera shows its temple style. Together they take about a day.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Approach through the entrance and look at the tank first. The Surya Kund is a large rectangular reservoir with four terraces and recessed steps leading to the bottom, with small shrines set into the steps. Then climb to the Sabha Mandapa, the assembly hall, with its carved pillars and ornamental arches, where you can see the temple's decorative style at close range.
Beyond it stands the Gudhamandapa, the main shrine hall, which has bands of sculpted figures, including deities and attendants, along its exterior walls. The sanctum does not hold an image today, but the structure is thought to have been aligned so that the rising sun would fall on the Surya image on certain days.
Allow time to sit and look. A guide helps considerably with the iconography. If your visit coincides with the third week of January, the Uttarardha Mahotsav dance festival is held here, with performances against the temple backdrop, but accommodation and parking are then stretched.
