The short answer

Vadnagar: Sharmishtha Lake and Kirti Toran: what visitors should know first

Only if you have a full day and enjoy history. Vadnagar is a longer drive than Modhera or Siddhpur, but pairs well with Modhera. The Kirti Toran and lake take about an hour, the museum a little more. Check museum timings in advance.

History and context

The story behind Vadnagar: Sharmishtha Lake and Kirti Toran

Archaeological work indicates habitation at Vadnagar from around 800 BCE, and Alexander Cunningham identified it with Anandapura. The two Kirti Torans are twelfth-century sandstone gateways of about forty feet in height.

The Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple dates from the fifteenth century and shows Indo-Saracenic influence. A new Archaeological Experiential Museum, built at a stated cost of 298 crore rupees, opened to the public on 1 February 2025.

Why it matters

Why Vadnagar: Sharmishtha Lake and Kirti Toran is worth your time

Vadnagar has been continuously inhabited for roughly 2,500 years, and Alexander Cunningham identified it with the ancient city of Anandapura. That depth of history is unusual even in India. The two Kirti Torans are the surviving gateways of a twelfth-century structure, and the lake has long been the heart of the town.

The town is also known as the birthplace of Narendra Modi, which has brought investment and visitors in recent years, including the large new museum that opened in 2025. If you like excavations and long timelines, it is a worthwhile addition to a Patan itinerary, though it is more of a history stop than a visual spectacle.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the Kirti Toran, two tall sandstone gateways about forty feet high, standing on the lake's edge. They are the best-known twelfth-century survivors in town, with finely carved bands of figures and ornament. Walk around them to see all sides.

Then follow the path along Sharmishtha Lake, where there is a landscaped park on an island. This is a calm spot for a short stroll and a rest.

If time allows, visit the Vadnagar Archaeological Experiential Museum, which presents excavated finds and tells the story of continuous habitation from around 800 BCE. Finish at the Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple, a fifteenth-century shrine with elaborate carved decoration. Combine the day with Modhera, which lies in the same general direction.
