Plan 01

1 day in Pawapuri

  1. 01

Day 1: Water temple morning, Nalanda afternoon

Reach Pawapuri early, before the heat, and walk the causeway to the Jal Mandir. Visit the Samosharan Mandir and the Gaon Mandir on foot, then stop at the Digambar Jain temple if you wish. Have lunch and rest. In the afternoon, drive to Nalanda (about 13 km by one source) for the ruins, or to Kundalpur next door. Carry water and a hat, and agree the return journey with your driver in advance.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days around Pawapuri

  1. 01

    Day 1: Pawapuri and Kundalpur

Spend the morning on the Jal Mandir, Samosharan and Gaon Mandir circuit, then take a long lunch break. In the late afternoon, drive to Kundalpur to see the Jain temples that Digambar tradition names as Mahavira's birthplace, and stay at Rajgir or Bihar Sharif for the night.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Nalanda and Rajgir

Start at Nalanda Mahavihara early and allow two to three hours for the ruins. After lunch, move on to Rajgir for the Naulakha Jain Temple and, if energy allows, the hot springs and the Vishwa Shanti Stupa ropeway. Raahzo has separate guides for both.

Nalanda Mahavihara2 to 3 hoursModerateEarly morning, October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Nalanda Mahavihara: The site is mostly level but unshaded, with gravel or dirt paths and few benches. Most visitors walk a mile or more. A hat, water and comfortable shoes matter most; take it in short stretches.

Plan 03

3 days around Pawapuri

  1. 01

    Day 1: The Pawapuri circuit

Walk the causeway to the Jal Mandir in the morning, then visit the Samosharan Mandir and the Gaon Mandir. Rest through the afternoon, and return to the tank in the late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds thin.

  2. 02

Day 2: Kundalpur, Nalanda and Silao

Visit Kundalpur first, then the Nalanda ruins. On the way back, stop in Silao to try the khaja the town is known for, and buy a box to carry home.

  3. 03

Day 3: Bihar Sharif and Rajgir

See the Badi Dargah in Bihar Sharif in the morning, then drive to Rajgir for the Naulakha Jain Temple and an unhurried afternoon at the hot springs. Spend the night in Rajgir, which has the widest choice of hotels in the area.

Pacing

Pacing a Pawapuri trip for parents and children

  • Visit the Jal Mandir early in the morning. The causeway of about 180 metres is level but has little shade, and the stone heats up by late morning.
  • Wear shoes that slip off easily. You will remove them at the entrance and walk the causeway barefoot, so carry a pair of thin socks if the ground is hot.
  • Avoid Diwali night and Mahavir Jayanti unless you are joining the pilgrimage. Queues, noise and crowds make these days tiring.
  • Rajgir has better hotels and food than Pawapuri; use it as a base and make Pawapuri a half-day outing by car.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medication, as shops are limited. Ask about wheelchair access at the Jal Mandir on arrival.
  • Heat: April to June is very hot, and the causeway has little shade. Visit at dawn, carry water and a hat, and rest through the afternoon.
