Plan 01

1 day in Penang

  1. 01

Day 1: George Town on foot, Kek Lok Si afternoon

Start early at Khoo Kongsi, then walk a few minutes to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion for the indoor rooms. Walk to Fort Cornwallis, then Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque. Have a long lunch and rest at your hotel. In the late afternoon take a taxi to Kek Lok Si, then return for an evening stroll through Little India.

Plan 02

2 days in Penang

  1. 01

    Day 1: The heritage core

Begin at Khoo Kongsi before it fills up, then see the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and book a guided tour of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. After a midday break, visit Fort Cornwallis, the mosque and Mahamariamman Temple, and walk Little India as the lights come on.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Tours cover courtyards, staircases and several floors, so there are steps and uneven granite in places. Allow for a short rest in the shaded courtyards. Tell the guide in advance if you need a slower pace.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Hill and temple

Go to Penang Hill first thing for the funicular and views while the air is clear. Come down for lunch, then visit Kek Lok Si in the afternoon, using the inclined lift for the upper levels. End with a quiet evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Penang HillHalf a day (about 3 to 4 hours including the ride)ModerateEarly morning on a clear weekday

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Penang Hill: The funicular removes the climb, but the summit has paths, steps and slopes, and the top station can be crowded. Wear flat shoes and pace yourself. The lower queue is the hard part for older visitors.

Go up Penang Hill early, visit Kek Lok Si on the way back, and spend the late afternoon and evening at Batu Ferringhi. Devotees can add the Waterfall Hilltop Temple, but be honest about the 513 steps.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Penang trip for parents and children

  • Walk the heritage core in the first half of the morning and rest indoors from late morning to mid-afternoon. The streets are flat but hot and humid.
  • Use ride-hailing apps or taxis between areas instead of walking long distances. Confirm the fare or use the meter, and keep your hotel's address saved in English and Malay.
  • Be honest about steps. Kek Lok Si has an inclined lift; the Waterfall Hilltop Temple has 513 steps and Penang Hill needs a funicular queue; choose accordingly.
  • Dress modestly for mosques and temples, and carry a scarf. Remove shoes at the door and carry socks for hot or cold floors.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers hospital care. Gleneagles Hospital Penang on Jalan Pangkor is a large private hospital with a 24-hour emergency department.
  • Carry a small umbrella and water at all times. Showers are common in every month and the humidity is high.
