Area by area

Penang neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    George Town heritage core

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to the main sights

Good to know: Boutique hotels in restored shophouses put Khoo Kongsi, the mansions and Little India within walking distance. Rooms can be small and noise from street life carries at night, so ask for an upper floor away from bars and check for stairs.

Sights in this area: Khoo Kongsi

  2. 02

Little India and the Queen Street area

Best for: Indian travellers who want familiar food and shops

Good to know: The Mahamariamman Temple and many Indian restaurants are close. The streets are busy and narrow, so choose a hotel with a lift and a quiet room.

  3. 03

Gurney Drive and the northern seafront

Best for: Travellers who want malls, sea views and a modern hotel

Good to know: A short taxi from the old city, with large hotels and shopping nearby. It is less atmospheric but easier for mobility and parking.

  4. 04

    Batu Ferringhi

Best for: Families who want a beach stay with resort facilities

Good to know: Resorts line a roughly 4 km beach strip about 11 km from the city. Plan on taxis for sightseeing, and check swimming conditions before entering the water.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
