Pench Tiger Reserve straddles the border between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The Madhya Pradesh side lies in Seoni and Chhindwara districts, in the Satpura landscape, and is the part most visitors mean when they plan a Pench safari. The Pench river runs roughly north to south through the reserve, and the Totladoh dam on the Maharashtra side creates a large reservoir along the state line.
The reserve was notified as a tiger reserve in 1992, built on a sanctuary created in 1977 and a national park in 1983. It is often linked to Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book stories, which are set in this region, although Kipling himself never visited. Wildlife includes tigers, leopards, dholes, sloth bears, gaur, sambar, chital and a long bird list.
The Maharashtra side has its own gates, with Sillari the best known, and is booked through a separate state system. This guide covers the Madhya Pradesh side, where safaris are booked on the official MP forest department portal and where the core zones close for the monsoon, usually from about 1 July to 30 September. Kanha has its own page; some travellers combine the two parks on one longer trip.
A Pench trip is simple to plan: pick a lodge near your gate, book the permits first, and keep the rest of the day free. It suits families and older travellers who are happy to sit in a vehicle and look, but it is not a sightseeing destination in the usual sense.

This is tight. Leave Nagpur very early by car to reach your gate in time for a morning safari, take the drive, then return after lunch. Only attempt this if you cannot stay overnight, and book a permit well ahead. A two-night stay is far more comfortable and gives better odds.
