Before you go
Pench with elderly parents: what to know
- Book a full vehicle so you can sit comfortably and ask the guide to stop or turn back.
- Carry a cushion or a folded shawl for bumpy tracks and wear layers; winter dawns are cold and summer afternoons are hot.
- Choose a lodge close to your gate to cut down the early-morning transfer.
- Plan one safari a day rather than two if you tire easily; rest between drives.
- Pack any regular medication and keep it with you; facilities near the gates are limited.
Easiest first
Places in Pench sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Jamtara Gate core zone (Places to visit · About 3-4 hours per safari) — A seated drive with no walking, but tracks are rough and a seat in the middle row is usually gentler on the back. Carry water and sun protection in summer.
- Karmajhiri Gate core zone (Places to visit · A safari of about 3-4 hours per slot) — The safari is a seated vehicle drive on bumpy forest tracks with no walking required. Choose a seat away from the wheel arch, and wear layers for cold mornings.
- Turia Gate core zone (Places to visit · One safari of about 3-4 hours; two to four safaris over two nights is typical) — You stay seated in an open vehicle on forest tracks, with no walking. Tracks are bumpy and dusty, early mornings are cold in winter and afternoons hot in summer, so bring layers, a hat and a cushion for the back.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Khawasa and Rukhad buffer zones (Places to visit · Half a day per safari; nature walks add an hour or two) — Vehicle drives are easy, but monsoon tracks are muddy and humid. Nature walks cross small streams and uneven ground, so skip them if balance is a concern.

Practical tips for Pench
- Booking. Use the official MP forest portal for permits, usually opening 120 days ahead, daily around 11:00. Beware of unofficial sites.
- ID. The photo ID you carry must match the name on the permit. Bring the original.
- Payments. Online payment covers the entry permit; vehicle hire and the forest guide are paid at the gate, in cash or by QR.
- Monsoon closure. Core zones close for the monsoon, typically about 1 July to 30 September. Check the portal, since dates can change.
- Cold and heat. Dawn drives in an open vehicle are cold in winter, with temperatures that drop to single digits at night. Summer afternoons are very hot.
- Getting there. Allow two to three hours by road from Nagpur. Avoid night driving on forest roads and plan arrival in daylight.
- Photography. Carry a zoom lens if you have one, but expect rules from the forest department on drones and flash; follow the guide.
- Dress. Wear muted colours and closed shoes, and bring a hat, scarf and light jacket for the open vehicle.
