Penchalakona is a small village and Hindu pilgrimage centre in Rapur mandal, Nellore district, about 70 km west of Nellore by the usual estimate. It sits at roughly 900 m in the Eastern Ghats, in forest that forms part of the Sri Penusila Narasimha Wildlife Sanctuary. Its temple to Lakshmi Narasimha is the reason most people come; it is a Swayambhu shrine where the deity is worshipped as a huge rock, and the name Penusila means big rock.

The valley is also linked to the sage Kanva, whose name survives in the river Kanva Nadi, later Kandaleru, and to the Chenchu Lakshmi legend, in which the goddess is born as the daughter of a forest chieftain. Tribal heritage is part of the place, and in 2015 a Girijan Utsav was proposed at the hill shrine.

There is little to do beyond the temple, a forest walk of about 40 to 60 minutes to a waterfall and the drive itself, so most visitors make it a half-day or full-day trip from Nellore. Accommodation is limited, with basic pilgrim lodging, and facilities such as ATMs are scarce. It suits quiet travellers who like forest air and short walks, not those seeking big-ticket sights.

Food to try in Penchalakona

Food and restaurants

Eating options in Penchalakona are simple. Expect basic vegetarian meals served near the temple, pilgrim canteens and tea stalls. Larger restaurants are in Rapur and Nellore, where Andhra meals, biryani and seafood are common. Carry water and snacks for the trek and fill up in Nellore or Rapur before the final hill road. Choose without overthinking

Which Penchalakona experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

The temple only, or the temple plus waterfall trek?

The temple alone takes one to two hours and suits almost everyone. Add the waterfall if you are a steady walker, have shoes with grip and have an extra two to three hours. Skip it in heavy rain.

A day trip from Nellore or an overnight stay?

A day trip is simpler, as lodging is basic and limited. Stay overnight only if you want a quiet evening at the temple or an early start for darshan and the falls.

Penchalakona or Udayagiri for a day out of Nellore?

Penchalakona is a pilgrimage and forest day with a short walk. Udayagiri is a fort town with a long climb and ruins. Choose Penchalakona for devotion and cooler air, and Udayagiri for history and a harder walk.

Waterfall in July to September or in winter?

Monsoon months show the strongest flow but the path is slippery. Winter is easier on the feet and has pleasant weather, though the stream may be thin.
