Plan 01

1 day in the Perhentian Islands

  1. 01

Day 1: Morning boat, snorkel, afternoon beach

Take an early speedboat from Kuala Besut, check in at your pre-booked chalet or resort and book a half-day snorkelling trip for the calm hours. Return to the beach for a rest during the hottest part of the day, then eat early and arrange your return boat before the last departures.

Plan 02

2 days in the Perhentian Islands

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and a quiet beach

Arrive by morning boat, settle in on Perhentian Besar and swim in the shallows. Keep the afternoon free and have dinner at your resort.

  2. 02

Day 2: Reef trip and departure

Join a guided snorkel in the morning, then return to your accommodation and take a mid-afternoon boat back so you reach Kuala Besut in daylight.

Plan 03

3 days in the Perhentian Islands

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive on Besar

Reach the island in the morning, rest and swim. Ask your resort about vegetarian meals in advance.

  2. 02

Day 2: Boat loop around the islands

Take a half-day boat trip with snorkelling stops, then rest in the afternoon. Visit Long Beach on Kecil by water taxi for dinner and return before dark.

  3. 03

Day 3: Gentle morning and departure

Walk or swim in the morning, check out and take a boat back to the mainland, leaving buffer time before onward travel.

Pacing

Pacing a Perhentian Islands trip for parents and children

  • Choose Besar over Kecil for calmer surroundings, and book a resort that meets the boat at the jetty.
  • Wet landings and small boats are the hardest part. Ask staff for help, wear water shoes and carry bags that can get splashed.
  • Take a water taxi instead of the muddy jungle trails, especially after rain.
  • Carry all regular medicines, a small first-aid kit and a copy of prescriptions; the island clinic is small and serious cases go to the mainland.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers water activities and medical evacuation, and check it before you board.
  • Drink only bottled or refilled water and use sun protection through the middle of the day.
