Before you go
Perhentian Islands with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose Besar over Kecil for calmer surroundings, and book a resort that meets the boat at the jetty.
- Wet landings and small boats are the hardest part. Ask staff for help, wear water shoes and carry bags that can get splashed.
- Take a water taxi instead of the muddy jungle trails, especially after rain.
- Carry all regular medicines, a small first-aid kit and a copy of prescriptions; the island clinic is small and serious cases go to the mainland.
- Buy travel insurance that covers water activities and medical evacuation, and check it before you board.
- Drink only bottled or refilled water and use sun protection through the middle of the day.
Easiest first
Places in Perhentian Islands sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (7)
- Island Hopping by Boat (Places to visit · 3 to 5 hours) — Mostly seated, but boarding and wading can be tricky. Bring a hat and water.
- Kampung Pasir Hantu (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — The village is compact, but paths can be uneven. Dress modestly and avoid midday heat.
- Kuala Besut Jetty (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours including ticketing) — The jetty is level, but boarding means stepping onto and off small boats, sometimes with waves. Ask boat staff for a hand and carry luggage in a soft bag.
- Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil (Places to visit · Half a day, or a few nights) — The sand is flat but soft and the walkways behind the beach are uneven. Shade is patchy, there are few handrails, and landing from boats often means wading in shallow water, which is awkward with weak knees.
- Perhentian Besar West Beach (Places to visit · Half a day or a few nights) — Mostly flat sand with resorts close to the shore, which suits slow walkers. Expect a wet landing from the boat, generator power with occasional cuts, and limited medical help on the island.
- Teluk Dalam, Perhentian Besar (Places to visit · Half a day or a stay) — Short, flat distances between chalets and the beach make this one of the gentler parts of the islands, though sand is soft and steps from jetties can be awkward.
- Turtle Conservation on the Perhentians (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — If you visit a hatchery or beach, ground is mostly flat sand, though walking at night is hard and not advised for older visitors.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Coral Bay, Perhentian Kecil (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The jungle path from Long Beach is muddy and uneven in places, with some roots and slopes. A water taxi is easier for anyone with limited mobility, and the bay itself has gentle, level sand.
- Perhentian Jungle Trails (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours per walk) — Trails are muddy, rooty and mosquito-prone. There are no handrails or benches, so older travellers should walk only in dry weather or take a boat.
- Perhentian Snorkelling and Diving (Places to visit · Half day) — Boat boarding, waves and wading make it hard for people with knee, balance or heart issues. A lifejacket and a calm-water site help, but check your health and insurance first.

Practical tips for Perhentian Islands
- Season. Visit roughly March or April to October. Monsoon seas can cancel boats.
- Boats. Regular boats stop by late afternoon, so arrive early and avoid costly charters.
- Cash. Bring enough ringgit; cards are rarely accepted and money changers give poor rates.
- Dress. Swimwear belongs on the beach. Cover shoulders and knees in villages and away from the shore.
- Alcohol. Only a few venues serve it, and Muslim-owned restaurants do not.
- Power. Generators fail at times, especially in late afternoon. Bring a torch and power bank.
- Health. Tap water is unsafe. Use sun protection, repellent and vinegar for sea-lice rashes; the island clinic is small.
- Environment. Do not touch coral or turtles, and take rubbish back; the islands lack sewage treatment.
