Why it matters

Why Perhentian Snorkelling and Diving is worth your time

The reefs are the heart of the Perhentians. The group was gazetted as a marine park in 1994, and dozens of dive sites ring the two main islands, with wildlife including sea turtles, clownfish, cuttlefish and reef sharks according to Wikipedia.

The same sources warn that coral decline and litter are real problems. Choosing an operator with smaller groups, using reef-safe sunscreen and never standing on coral are small choices that matter in a protected area. For older travellers the trade-off is simple: a calm morning and a lifejacket give a safe taste of the reef, while demanding dives should be left to the fit and certified.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Most visitors start with a snorkelling half-day. Operators on Long Beach and Besar run boats to nearby sites, with stops of varying length, and Wikivoyage mentions Teluk Pauh, Shark Point and Tanjung Basi as popular spots. Ask the operator how many boats share a site and whether snorkellers are told to keep off the coral.

Turtles and blacktip reef sharks are commonly seen and, per Wikivoyage, harmless to swimmers, but do not chase or touch any animal. Wear a rash vest or long sleeves against sun and thimble jellyfish larvae, called sea lice, which can cause rashes; vinegar helps. If you are not a confident swimmer, wear a lifejacket throughout and stay with the guide.

Certified divers can book dives from many shops on both islands. Wikivoyage reports visibility of about 10 to 20 metres and a dive season from roughly March to October. Compare equipment, safety briefings and group sizes rather than price alone.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
