The short answer

Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil: what visitors should know first

Go if you want the social side of the islands: easy snorkelling, cafes and boat taxis in one place. It is busy and informal, so quieter travellers and many older visitors may prefer Besar. Arrive by water taxi from the jetty.

History and context

The story behind Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil

Perhentian Kecil is the smaller of the two main islands, about 5.8 square kilometres. The whole group was gazetted as a marine park in 1994, and the islands have no paved roads.

Why it matters

Why Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil is worth your time

Long Beach is where most of the islands' visitors end up, and that tells you how Perhentian Kecil works. The island has no roads, so the beach functions as its main street, with boat taxis, dive shops, cafes and cheap rooms packed along one stretch of shoreline. It is the best place to get your bearings and arrange everything else.

It also shows the pressures on a marine park. Wikivoyage notes litter and reef damage as serious problems, and the islands have no sewage system. Choosing operators who limit boat numbers, carrying your own refillable bottle and keeping off the coral all make a difference to a place that depends on its water staying clear.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Long Beach as the island's main street. Guesthouses and small cafes sit just behind the sand, dive shops line the shore, and boats pick up snorkelling passengers right at the water's edge. Walk its length in the early morning, when the sun is mild and the sea usually flat, then decide where to settle for breakfast.

Swimming is easy off the beach, but the best coral and fish are a short boat ride away, so most visitors book a snorkelling half-day with a local operator rather than relying on the shallows. Compare operators on how they treat the reef, how many people they take per boat and whether life jackets are offered. Gear rental is cheap, and reef-safe sunscreen or a long-sleeved rash vest protects both you and the coral.

In the evening the mood is relaxed rather than rowdy. Alcohol is available at only a few places, because many outlets are Muslim-owned, and power can be generator-based, so expect the odd outage. Bring a torch for the walk back along the sand.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Agree boat fares before you board
  • Carry cash, as cards are rarely accepted
  • Bring a torch for the evening walk
  • Rent snorkel gear rather than carrying your own

The sand is flat but soft and the walkways behind the beach are uneven. Shade is patchy, there are few handrails, and landing from boats often means wading in shallow water, which is awkward with weak knees.

FAQs

Is Long Beach good for families?

It works for older children who swim well, but the beach is busy and informal. Families with young children or grandparents often find Besar calmer.

Can I swim here all year?

Not safely. The monsoon from roughly November to February brings rough seas, and most places shut. Plan for the dry season.

Is there nightlife?

Only a quiet version: a handful of venues serve alcohol, and most places wind down early.
