The short answer

Jiya Chai: what visitors should know first

Yes, for a simple and inexpensive vegan lunch in town, and for vegetarians curious about real local jay cooking. Go early, because older sources say it closes in the afternoon. Jain diners should note that root vegetables are not excluded.

Diet

Why it matters

Why Jiya Chai is worth your time

Jay food is the local tradition that most naturally suits Indian vegetarian travellers. Built around Chinese Buddhist practice, it leaves out meat, dairy, eggs, garlic and onion, and during the Vegetarian Festival the whole island takes part. Jiya Chai gives you that food all year, in the kind of ordinary neighbourhood place where local people actually eat it.

It also has a lot to teach about the difference between labels. Jay is close to vegan and in some respects close to Jain, yet it is neither by definition. A meal here, eaten with that in mind, shows why it pays to ask careful questions rather than rely on a single word.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Choosing from the trays

A row of prepared dishes means you can see the food and point, with no language problem.

  2. 02

    Southern Thai curries

Coconut curries with moringa pods or senna leaves are a real taste of local cooking.

  3. 03

    Across from Jui Tui

The shrine is just over the road, making this an easy pairing.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk in and look along the trays. You point to what you want and it comes on rice, which makes ordering simple even without Thai. Expect curries and stir-fries, and there is a shorter a la carte list as well. Coconut-based curries with moringa pods or senna leaves are the sort of thing you will not find in a hotel, and they are worth trying if you enjoy a slightly bitter edge.

Ask for milder dishes if your group is sensitive to chilli, since southern Thai curries can be very hot. Bills here are modest, so order several small plates rather than one large one.

Jain diners should treat jay as a helpful starting point, not a guarantee. HappyCow states that no garlic or onion are used, but jay rules do not exclude potato, carrot and other root vegetables, so read the tray before pointing. Follow your meal with a visit to Jui Tui Shrine across the road.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Go early, while the trays are full and before any afternoon closing
  • Carry small notes
  • Ask for mild dishes if chilli is a concern
  • Check trays for potato and carrot if you avoid root vegetables

FAQs

Is Jiya Chai vegan?

HappyCow lists it as vegan, and a guide checked in July 2026 describes it as a vegan jay restaurant. We checked these listings in November 2026.

Is jay food the same as Jain food?

No. HappyCow says Jiya Chai uses no garlic or onion, which helps, but root vegetables such as potato and carrot are not excluded, so we do not tag it Jain.

Is it still open?

A review from January 2026 and a guide from July 2026 suggest so, though one older note questioned this. Confirm before you make a special trip.
