Kata and Kata Noi
Best for: Families and older travellers who want a swimmable beach and a quieter evening
Good to know: One of the island's better family beaches: shallow in high season, with shade and plenty of loungers. Fewer Indian restaurants than Patong, so plan meals or ask the hotel. Check how steep the hotel's access road and paths are, since many properties here climb the hillside.
- 02
Patong (north end)
Best for: Indian food, shopping and easy transport
Good to know: Patong has the widest choice of Indian vegetarian food and the most hotels. It is also the centre of the island's nightlife, so stay well away from Bangla Road if you have children or light sleepers. The north end of the beach is calmer, with softer sand and more parking.
- 03
Phuket Old Town
Best for: Heritage, cafes and vegan food on foot
Good to know: Walkable streets, shrines and museums, with no beach. Good for two nights around a Sunday market. Parking is hard on the main streets and some heritage buildings have no lift, so check before booking.

Karon
Best for: A long beach at a gentler pace than Patong
Good to know: A long stretch of sand between Patong and Kata, and a reasonable compromise on noise. The sea is rough in the monsoon months, as on all the west coast, so choose a hotel with a good pool if you travel between May and October.

The Memory at On On Hotel
Phang Nga Road, Phuket Old Town · Heritage boutique hotel · Price band: ₹₹
A restored Sino-Portuguese hotel on Phang Nga Road, opened in the late 1920s as Phuket's first hotel. It is a characterful base for two nights in the old town, rather than a beach stay.
For older travellers: The building is two storeys with thick walls and arched openings. We could not confirm a lift, so request a ground-floor room if stairs are a problem. You are close to restaurants, but the drive to any beach is significant.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
Questions about staying in Phuket
Which is the best beach area for families?
Kata is usually the best first choice for its shallow water and shade in high season. Patong suits families who put Indian food and shopping first, as long as they stay away from Bangla Road and base themselves towards the north end.
