The short answer

Pokaran Fort (Balagarh): what visitors should know first

Yes, for a short, easy stop on the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road. Allow an hour, look at the walls and gateways, and ask at the entrance about the museum and any guided visit, since opening arrangements are not published.

History and context

The story behind Pokaran Fort (Balagarh)

Pokaran Fort was historically called Balagarh and was the seat of the Champawats, a sub-clan of the Rathores of Marwar-Jodhpur. Accounts of its date differ: some travel sources give the 14th century, while others describe a 16th-century fort raised over an earlier structure by Rao Maldeo of Marwar. It is said to have passed to Maha Singh's line a century or so later, and his descendants continue to live there. The last jagirdar before Independence, Bhawani Singh, was elected to the first Lok Sabha as an independent in 1952.

Why it matters

Why Pokaran Fort (Balagarh) is worth your time

Pokaran Fort matters because it is a working fort, not a museum piece. Its owners, the Champawats, a sub-clan of the Rathores of Marwar, have held Pokaran for generations, and their descendants still live in part of it. That continuity is rare in Rajasthan, where most forts passed to the state or to big hotel chains.

It also gives a traveller on a desert road a reason to stop. Pokaran is better known nationally for the Army's nuclear test range, which is closed to visitors; the fort and the old town are the town's own visitable history.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The fort is in the middle of Pokaran, so arriving is simple: drive in from the highway and park near the main gate. Walk round the outside first. The red stone walls, bastions and old city doorways tell you more about the layout than any signboard, and the lanes around the base are the old town.

Inside, ask about the museum. The family collection is described as including paintings, portraits, weapons and pottery. Palaces within the complex are named Mangal Niwas, Phool Mahal, Hawa Mahal and Rani Mahal, and there is a Durga temple, though not every part is open to visitors. Expect a guide from the family or staff rather than a ticket office and a queue.

The fort is not a half-day sight. It works as a pause on the long road between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, ideally combined with lunch at the hotel and a look at the town's potters. If you are staying in the fort, the quiet courtyards in the evening are the best part of the visit.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask at the gate about the museum and guided visits
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon
  • Respect closed private areas
  • Combine with lunch or a stay in the fort hotel

Mostly level courtyards with some steps and uneven floors in older parts. There is shade in the courtyards and the pace is gentle, which suits most older travellers; the heat outside is the main difficulty in summer.
Tickets and access
Entry fee and museum timings are not published; confirm at the gate. Part of the fort is private residence and part is a hotel, so some areas are closed to day visitors.
