Plan 01

1 day in Poonch

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, bazaar and the gurdwara

Start in the morning at Poonch Fort and view it from the lower road before asking about entry. Walk through the old bazaar for tea and a simple lunch, then drive a short way out to Dera Nangali Sahib in the afternoon and eat at the langar if you wish. Return to town before dusk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Poonch Fort45 minutes to 1.5 hoursModerateMorning light, April to June or September to November; winters are cold with occasional snow
Dera Nangali Sahib1 to 1.5 hoursEasyWeekday mornings; the Baisakhi eve festival in April draws large crowds

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Poonch Fort: The approach is a short but uphill walk on uneven ground, and the courtyards have broken steps, no handrails and little seating. Older visitors are usually best served by viewing the facade from the lower road and skipping the inner levels.

Plan 02

2 days in Poonch

  1. 01

    Day 1: Town and shrines

Spend the morning at Poonch Fort and the bazaar. After lunch, visit Dera Nangali Sahib and sit for a while in the prayer hall. End with a slow evening in town.

  2. 02

Day 2: Mandi and Budha Amarnath

Drive to Mandi early to visit the Budha Amarnath temple while the valley is quiet. Return by the same road, stop for lunch in town and rest in the afternoon. Outside the August yatra the visit is peaceful; during it, expect crowds and checks.

Plan 03

3 days in Poonch

  1. 01

    Day 1: Fort and gurdwara

See Poonch Fort and the bazaar in the morning and Dera Nangali Sahib in the afternoon.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Mandi valley

Visit Budha Amarnath at Mandi in the morning and spend the afternoon resting or exploring the valley road.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Mughal Road

If the road is open, drive towards Behramgalla and Noori Chamb for the waterfall and views. Go as far toward Pir ki Gali as time and weather allow, and be back before dark.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Noori ChambHalf to full day including the driveModerateMay to October; avoid heavy rain and snow months

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Noori Chamb: The viewing point is a short walk from the road, but the path is uneven and wet near the water. Facilities are minimal. Older visitors can enjoy it from the nearest vantage point and rest in the car.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Poonch trip for parents and children

  • Hire a driver who knows the hill roads and agree the day's route before you start.
  • Carry photo ID at all times; Poonch is a border district and checks are routine.
  • Bring warm layers even in shoulder months; mornings and evenings are cold, and winters are snowy.
  • Altitude is modest in town but Pir ki Gali is around 3,500 m, so take it slowly and turn back if unwell.
  • Keep medicines and a basic first-aid kit with you; medical facilities beyond the district hospital are far away.
  • Avoid the August Budha Amarnath yatra days if crowds and checks would tire you.
