Poonch sits at about 1,000 m on the banks of the Poonch river, a small town in a green valley with the Pir Panjal ranges rising behind it. It is the headquarters of a border district, close to the Line of Control, and it is far from the usual Jammu and Kashmir circuits. That distance is the reason to come: the town is unhurried, the valley is lovely in spring and autumn, and visitors are few.

The main sight is Poonch Fort, built in layers by the Rathore rulers, the Sikhs and the Dogras and damaged by the 2005 earthquake. Around it are the Sikh shrine of Dera Nangali Sahib, the Shiva temple at Mandi, the waterfall at Noori Chamb and the Mughal Road, which climbs over Pir ki Gali to the Kashmir Valley.

This is a destination for travellers who are comfortable with basic facilities and long drives. There is no railway, and the nearest working major airports are far away. Roads are good by hill standards, but security checks are routine, snow closes high roads in winter and services thin out quickly outside the town. Plan with a driver, carry photo ID and treat each outing as a half-day.

Food to try in Poonch

Food and restaurants

Food in Poonch is simple and local. Expect Kashmiri-influenced and Pahari home cooking in small eateries around the main bazaar: rice with dal or rajma, mutton and chicken curries, lamb, and noon chai with bakery bread. Specific named restaurants are not documented in public sources, so ask your hotel or driver for a clean, busy place.

The langar at Dera Nangali Sahib is the most reliable meal for vegetarians, and it is open to visitors of any faith. Drink bottled or boiled water, avoid raw salads from roadside stalls, and carry your own snacks on longer drives.

Shopping in Poonch

Shopping

Shopping in Poonch is mostly for everyday goods. The main bazaar sells fabrics, shawls, dry fruit and local woollens, and Pahari handwork occasionally appears in small shops. There is no craft emporium to plan around, so treat it as a place to pick up modest souvenirs. Prices are negotiable at ordinary shops; ask before photographing people or stalls.

Choose without overthinking

Which Poonch experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Poonch Fort or Dera Nangali Sahib, if you only have a morning?

Choose the fort for history and architecture, though access is limited and the site is damaged. Choose Dera Nangali Sahib for a calm, welcoming visit with an easy walk and a free meal at the langar.

Mandi or Noori Chamb for a day out?

Mandi is a pilgrimage trip with a closer, simpler road. Noori Chamb is longer and is better as a scenic day trip along the Mughal Road in summer.

Mughal Road or the Jammu highway to Kashmir?

The Mughal Road is shorter for Poonch and offers spectacular scenery, but it closes in winter and has few facilities. The Jammu route is longer but more reliable.
