Plan 01

1 day in Poovar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Estuary morning

Leave Kovalam or the city early so you reach Poovar jetty by about 8 am. Take a one- or two-hour boat ride through the mangrove channels, past Elephant Rock and on to the Golden Sand Beach. Return to the jetty before the sun is high, have lunch, and rest. If you have energy in the late afternoon, stop at Azhimala Shiva Temple or Kovalam's Lighthouse Beach on the drive back.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Azhimala Shiva Temple: The main shrine is reached by steps on a cliff, and the edges are open in places. Older visitors can enjoy the view from the lower levels, and should avoid wet rocks in the monsoon.

Plan 02

2 days in Poovar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and cruise

Travel to Poovar mid-morning, transfer by boat to your island resort and rest through the afternoon. Take a late-afternoon canoe ride or boat trip when the light softens and the birds are active.

  2. 02

Day 2: Pozhikkara and the road back

Take an early walk, then visit Pozhikkara beach at Pozhiyoor for a quiet look at the river mouth. Return to the mainland, stop at Azhimala Shiva Temple, and end with Kovalam or the airport, depending on your plans.

Plan 03

3 days in Poovar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Settle in

Arrive and take a short boat ride at sunset. Keep the day light; the journey and the heat are tiring.

  2. 02

Day 2: Estuary and village shore

Do the full cruise early, with time on the Golden Sand Beach, then rest. In the late afternoon visit Pozhikkara and the island mosque, with permission and at a quiet hour.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Vizhinjam and Kovalam

Leave early for Vizhinjam fishing harbour at sunrise, then Azhimala Shiva Temple and a late breakfast at Kovalam's Lighthouse Beach before heading to the airport or city.

With parents at Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour: The ground is wet, uneven and busy with crates and vehicles. Older visitors can watch from the edge or from a car and should wear non-slip shoes and avoid the busiest hour.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Poovar trip for parents and children

  • Choose a larger boat with proper seats and a canopy, and accept a hand when boarding; the step down is the riskiest moment.
  • Go in the morning. The estuary has little shade and the midday sun is strong even in winter.
  • Wear the life jacket for the whole ride and keep sun cream, a hat and water within reach.
  • The Golden Sand Beach is soft sand with no benches. Stay by the boat or walk only a short way.
  • Arrange a driver for the whole day; public transport to the jetty is limited and taxis are scarce.
  • Carry any medicines with you rather than leaving them in the car, and note that hospital care is in Thiruvananthapuram, about 25 km away.
