Poovar with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose a larger boat with proper seats and a canopy, and accept a hand when boarding; the step down is the riskiest moment.
- Go in the morning. The estuary has little shade and the midday sun is strong even in winter.
- Wear the life jacket for the whole ride and keep sun cream, a hat and water within reach.
- The Golden Sand Beach is soft sand with no benches. Stay by the boat or walk only a short way.
- Arrange a driver for the whole day; public transport to the jetty is limited and taxis are scarce.
- Carry any medicines with you rather than leaving them in the car, and note that hospital care is in Thiruvananthapuram, about 25 km away.

- Poovar Backwater Cruise (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours on the water; half a day including the drive from Kovalam or the city) — Little walking, but boarding means a step down to a moving boat, often without a rail. Ask for a hand, choose a larger boat with proper seats, and wear a hat; open stretches have almost no shade.
- Poovar Mosque (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — Short, level approach, but expect to remove shoes and sit or stand on the floor. Ask whether seating is available; avoid prayer times and Friday midday crowds.
- Pozhikkara Estuary and Beach (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The approach is by village road and then sand; there are few facilities and little seating or shade. Keep to the first stretch near the road if walking on soft sand is difficult.

- Golden Sand Beach, Poovar (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes as part of a cruise) — The landing is a boat-to-sand transfer, and the beach is soft sand with no benches or shade. Older visitors can stay in the boat and enjoy the view, or walk only the first stretch near the landing point.

Practical tips for Poovar
- Heat. The estuary has little shade. Even in winter, daytime highs reach the low 30s, so go in the first hours of the morning and carry a hat and water.
- Monsoon. June, July and October are the wettest months, with a rough sea at the river mouth. Boats may not run, so check before travelling.
- Getting there. A hired car with a driver is simplest. KSRTC buses serve Neyyattinkara and Thiruvananthapuram, and the Poovar bus stand is about 1 km from the beach, but onward transport is limited.
- Boat prices. Rides are sold by private operators. Agree the route, duration and price before you board, and ask for life jackets.
- Money. Carry some cash for small purchases near the jetty; card acceptance can be patchy outside resorts.
- Dress and respect. Dress modestly in the villages and at the mosque, and ask before photographing people, fishing boats or worshippers.
- Swimming. The river mouth has changing currents and surf. Do not swim far, keep children close and ask your boatman where it is safe.
- Facilities. Toilets, shade and food are limited near the jetty and absent at the beach. Eat before you go and carry water and any medicines.
