Gandhi's birthplace on the Arabian Sea: a quiet, flat port town of memorials, a Krishna-and-Sudama temple and long coastal drives.

Porbandar is where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born, on 2 October 1869, and that fact shapes almost every itinerary. The memorial at his family house, Kirti Mandir, is the town's anchor, but the town itself is a modest, working Saurashtra port on the Arabian Sea, with a fishing community, a deep-water harbour and a Jethwa Rajput past that goes back to at least the 16th century. It is not a city of grand monuments, and it is better for being taken at that scale.

Most visitors need a day, or a day and a half, in town. Kirti Mandir, Sudama Mandir and the Bharat Mandir exhibition are all short, level visits. Shri Hari Mandir, the Sandipani campus on the edge of town, is worth an unhurried hour. Add an evening on the Chowpatty seafront and a taste of khajli, the fried flour snack the town is known for, and you have covered the centre. The Bird Sanctuary and the exterior of Huzoor Palace fit in as short extras.

Porbandar also works well as a base on the Saurashtra coast. It sits between Dwarka and Somnath, with Madhavpur's beach, the Barda hills and Jambuvan cave within a morning's drive. The climate is the gentlest of Gujarat's big towns: it is the least hot of the state's major cities, and winters are dry and bright. For parents and older travellers the town is easy: little walking, few steps, and a pace that suits a family that does not want to rush.

Food to try in Porbandar

Food and restaurants · 1 guide

Porbandar's signature is khajli, also called khajla: a crisp, deep-fried biscuit made from flour and ghee, sold plain, with masala or in a sweet version that is a festival favourite. It is easy to carry, and shops in town sell it by weight. Beyond that, the food is Saurashtra and Gujarati: thalis, farsan snacks such as mathiya and gathiya, and fresh seafood from the fishing community along the coast.

For families and older travellers, vegetarian Gujarati thalis at the established restaurants near the main roads are the easy choice. Street food around Chowpatty is lively in the evenings; choose busy stalls with fresh frying and stick to bottled water. Ask about spice levels, since Saurashtrian cooking can be hotter than visitors expect.

Shopping in Porbandar

Shopping

Shopping in Porbandar is small-scale and practical. Khajli is the obvious purchase: buy it from a shop with high turnover so it is fresh, and ask for it packed for travel. The town's main bazaar around Kirti Mandir sells everyday goods, Gandhi-related books and khadi cloth. Prices in ordinary shops are mostly fixed, but ask at stalls and for taxis before you commit.

This is not a destination for large craft purchases. For serious textile or handicraft shopping, travellers usually wait for larger Gujarat cities such as Rajkot or Jamnagar.

Choose without overthinking

Which Porbandar experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Kirti Mandir or Sudama Mandir, if you only have time for one?

Choose Kirti Mandir if you came for Gandhi: it is the birth house and a small museum, and takes about an hour. Choose Sudama Mandir if you want a calm, shaded place of worship. In practice both are short and close, so most visitors do both in a morning.

Madhavpur beach or the Barda hills for a day trip?

Madhavpur is the easier choice: a calm sandy beach with a temple, and a road journey of about an hour. Barda is wilder and suits travellers who want forest and hills, but access depends on arrangements with the forest department and the roads are rougher.

Town sights only, or add Dwarka and Somnath?

The town needs a day. Dwarka and Somnath are each about two hours away, so each is a full day trip. If you want pilgrimage as the focus, base yourself in Porbandar and make one early start per temple town, or move your hotel to avoid long return drives.

Winter or monsoon visit?

Winter, from November to February, is easier on older travellers and better for outdoor sights. The monsoon brings heavy rain from June to September, with the wettest weather in July, and the Bird Sanctuary and coast look green but travel slows.

Porbandar travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat

From March to May the days are hot and humid near the coast. Plan town sights early, rest at midday and keep water with you.

  2. 02

    Monsoon

Rain arrives around mid-June and peaks in July and August, with heavy downpours and a rough sea. Flooded roads can cut off coastal drives, so allow flexibility.

  3. 03

    Getting around

Autos and taxis cover the town. For Madhavpur, Barda, Jambuvan cave, Dwarka or Somnath, hire a car and driver for the day and agree the route beforehand.

  4. 04

    Opening hours

Kirti Mandir is generally open through the day, Sudama Mandir has a morning-to-evening window, and Bharat Mandir is closed over midday. Confirm timings on the day, since they change.

  5. 05

    Temple etiquette

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove footwear at temple entrances. Photography rules vary, so ask before using a camera inside shrines.

  6. 06

    Money

UPI and cards work in larger shops and hotels, but carry cash for small stalls, temple offerings and taxis, especially on the coast.

  7. 07

    Flights

Air service to Porbandar has started and stopped over the years, so check the current schedule before booking. Rajkot is the usual fallback airport.

  8. 08

    Sea safety

Currents can be strong along the Saurashtra coast. Follow local warnings, avoid swimming at unfamiliar beaches and keep children close to the shore.

Porbandar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Porbandar is flat. Kirti Mandir, Sudama Mandir and Bharat Mandir are short, level visits, so most older travellers manage the town comfortably.
  • Plan town sights for the morning, break for lunch and rest, and go back for Bharat Mandir's afternoon session. Check opening hours first, since some sites close at midday.
