It is not a beach destination or a tourist resort; it is a working capital city with colonial bones, a strategic naval and administrative centre, and the gateway through which almost every island visitor passes. The Cellular Jail, the dark heart of the city, is the draw: a British-era penal settlement where independence leaders and political prisoners were held, isolated from India by the sea and the journey itself.
Most travellers arrive at Port Blair International Airport, collect permits if needed for restricted areas (check current rules before travel), clear customs, and move onward within a day or two. But it is worth staying two to three days. The Cellular Jail demands a morning or afternoon, and not a rushed hour. The audio-light show in the evening gives it texture; the silent corridors at other times give it weight. Beyond the jail, Port Blair has a modest bazaar (Aberdeen Bazaar), a small museum in the old Secretariat building, and a waterfront with ferries to Havelock, Neil and other islands. The town is built on a steep hillside, which means neighborhoods climb, but most sights are accessible by auto or taxi.
For seniors and families, Port Blair is a transit point more than a destination, but the flat jail interiors (except for the audio-light show amphitheatre, which is outdoors on a slope) and the low-key pace make it manageable. The heat is the main challenge: the city sits on the coast, exposed, and the monsoon humidity (June to September) is intense. October to March is the sensible window.
