History and context

The story behind Penukonda Fort

Wikipedia says the fort is a granite hill fort whose northern-gate inscription records Bukka Raya I giving the province to his son Vira Virupanna Udaiyar. After the Battle of Talikota in 1565, Tirumala Deva Raya made Penukonda the second capital of the Vijayanagara empire; it remained so until 1592.

Later the fort passed through the Sultanate of Bijapur, Maratha chiefs, Mysore and the Nizam, before coming under British administration. The hill fort and its northern gateway are protected as a Monument of National Importance.

Why it matters

Why Penukonda Fort is worth your time

Penukonda is a rare surviving place where you can feel the later Vijayanagara empire after its main capital fell. Wikipedia records that the capital moved here after the Battle of Talikota in 1565 and stayed until 1592, when the court moved to Chandragiri.

The town also shows how many layers of rule passed through it: Hoysala, Vijayanagara, Bijapur, Maratha, Mysore and Nizam all feature in its history. The mix of Hindu, Jain and Muslim monuments is part of its interest. For travellers based in Puttaparthi, it is the strongest non-spiritual outing in the district.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Penukonda sits on the road between Puttaparthi and Bengaluru, which makes it an easy half-day addition on the way in or out. Start early. The Vijayanagara rulers moved their capital here after the Battle of Talikota in 1565, and the walls, gateways and ruined buildings reflect that period. The district tourism page names Gagan Mahal, described as a royal summer resort, and the tomb of Baba Fakruddin, a Sufi saint.

Wikipedia's article on the fort lists massive walls, a large tank on the southern side, the Sher Khan Mosque in dark granite, and an ASI-listed stepped well called Seethatheertham. Ask a local guide or your driver for the sequence, because signage may be limited, and start with what is closest to the road.

The upper fort involves climbing. If energy or knees are an issue, the lower sights give a good sense of the place. Bring water, a hat and sturdy footwear, and avoid the hottest months.
