Raebareli lies on the banks of the Sai River in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh, at about 110 metres above sea level and roughly 80 km from Lucknow. It is a working district headquarters rather than a tourist destination, and it rewards visitors who want a quiet, local day with a few specific stops.
Tradition credits the Bhars with founding the town, then called Bharauli. Ibrahim Shah of the Jaunpur Sultanate conquered it and built its fort in the fifteenth century, and the Jama Masjid of the same period still stands. The British made it a district headquarters in 1858 and a municipality followed in 1867. Today the old fort is mostly ruined, with only its west gate surviving, while the mosque remains in use.
The better reasons to come are outside the town centre. Samaspur Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar wetland near Salon, is best from winter into early spring, and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Botanical Garden sits on the Lucknow-Varanasi highway on the north bank of the Sai. Dalmau, a historic town on the Ganges, is a longer outing, with a ruined fort above the river and a large Kartik Purnima bathing fair.
Plan it as a one-day side trip from Lucknow or a stop on the Lucknow-Prayagraj road, and expect basic facilities. Winter is far kinder than the hot, humid months.
