Why it matters

Why Samaspur Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Samaspur was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance on 3 October 2019 and is one of the main wetlands for waterbirds in this part of Awadh. More than 250 species have been recorded, and some winter visitors travel over 5,000 km to reach it.

The lake also supports local fisheries, with a dozen kinds of fish recorded, so the sanctuary is a working landscape as well as a reserve. Visiting quietly, without litter or noise, helps the wetland stay as it is.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Samaspur as a morning outing from Raebareli, leaving early so you reach the lake in soft light. The sanctuary is built around a shallow lake and surrounding wetland, and viewing is mostly done from the edge, on foot or from a parked car. Bring binoculars if you have them, a hat, water and snacks.

In winter you can expect large numbers of migratory ducks and geese, with greylag geese, northern pintails and ruddy shelducks among the long-distance arrivals. Resident birds include knob-billed ducks, Eurasian spoonbills, kingfishers and vultures. Move quietly, stay on existing tracks and ask permission before entering any farmland on the edge of the sanctuary.

Ask at the forest office or locally whether any boat or watchtower arrangements are in place; none are guaranteed. Water levels change through the year, and a dry month can mean far fewer birds. After the lake, return to Raebareli for lunch and rest, or continue towards Lucknow or Prayagraj if you have a car.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go at sunrise in winter and carry water, snacks and a hat
  • Hire a car with driver for the day
  • Ask locally about current entry rules
  • Stay on tracks and avoid farmland without permission
  • Bring binoculars and keep noise low
