Raghurajpur is a small village on the south bank of the Bhargabi river, roughly 10 to 14 km from Puri, and it is one of the few places in India where a craft is visible at household scale. Houses along the main street have painted walls, and many double as studios, with an artist working on a verandah and finished pieces hanging inside. After a two-year study by INTACH, it was declared Odisha's first heritage crafts village in 2000.
The village is best known for pattachitra, the cloth painting of the Jagannath tradition, and for palm-leaf engraving, but the craft list is longer: tussar-silk painting, papier-mâché masks and toys, painted coconuts and areca nuts, and wooden toys. It is also associated with Gotipua dance, the boy-dancer tradition that preceded Odissi, and with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the Odissi master who was born here in 1926.
This is a short, gentle visit rather than a full-day destination. The street is flat, there are no formal sights with opening hours, and most people spend one to three hours. It fits neatly into a Puri and Konark trip, ideally in the morning and in the cooler months, with a meal planned in Puri because the village itself has little in the way of restaurants.
Facilities have been uneven over the years, so check current access before you go. Go with modest expectations of comfort and generous curiosity, ask before entering any house or photographing anyone, and buy directly from artists if something appeals.
