Gotipua Dance and the Dasabhuja Gurukul, Raghurajpur: History, highlights and visitor guide

Gotipua is the boy-dancer tradition that preceded Odissi, and Raghurajpur is its best-known home. A gurukul founded by Guru Maguni Charan Das still teaches it in the traditional way.

The short answer

Gotipua Dance and the Dasabhuja Gurukul: what visitors should know first

Go if you can arrange a performance or demonstration in advance. Gotipua is not a daily show, so turning up expecting one is a gamble. Check locally or with Odisha Tourism for the spring festival or ask to meet the gurukul.

History and context

The story behind Gotipua Dance and the Dasabhuja Gurukul

Maguni Charan Das was a Gotipua guru from Raghurajpur who received the Padma Shri in 2004 and died on 5 December 2008. His style is called the Raghurajpur Gharana of Gotipua. He founded the school that trains Gotipua dancers in the gurukul way.

Why it matters

Why Gotipua Dance and the Dasabhuja Gurukul is worth your time

Gotipua is regarded as the precursor of Odissi. After the decline of the female temple dancers, or maharis, around the sixteenth century, boy dancers carried the tradition forward. Many Odissi masters, including Kelucharan Mohapatra, began as Gotipua dancers.

The tradition also keeps the Gita Govinda and Radha-Krishna themes alive in dance. Seeing it near Puri, where the temple sculpture shows the older dance, makes the link between sculpture, ritual and performance concrete.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Gotipua means single boy in Odia, and the dancers are boys who dress as women to honour Jagannath and Krishna. They begin training in childhood and perform until adolescence. The dance includes acrobatic postures, called bandha nrutya, which depict scenes from Krishna's life, together with devotional songs and rhythm.

The village's best-known teacher was Guru Maguni Charan Das, who founded the Dasabhuja Gotipua Odishi Nrutya Praishad, a school that teaches the art in the traditional gurukul way and also supports the students' academic education. He died in 2008, and the tradition continues through his students. Ask locally whether a rehearsal or demonstration is possible during your visit.

If you cannot see a performance, a visit is still useful for context. Knowing where Odissi's roots are will make performances in Puri or Bhubaneswar easier to follow.

Plan with confidence
