Raiganj is the headquarters of Uttar Dinajpur district, in the north of West Bengal, close to the Bihar border. It sits on the Kulik River, and for most of its history it has been a market and railway town rather than a destination. Trade is its main business, agriculture surrounds it, and the district's administrative buildings are at Karnajora, a few kilometres out.
What brings visitors is the Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary, widely known as the Kulik Bird Sanctuary. It is only about 4 km north of the town centre, beside the national highway, and it holds a large heronry: Asian openbill storks, egrets, cormorants and night herons nest in its trees, and the district administration lists around 164 species in all. It is small, easy and close, which makes it unusually friendly for older birdwatchers.
Beyond the sanctuary the town offers quieter interests. Bahin Zamindar Bari, a brick-built landlord's house on the Nagar River, is a short way south of town and has been declared a heritage building. Karnajora has a small district museum and park. The surrounding fields grow Tulaipanji, a fragrant local rice that has a Geographical Indication tag.
Raiganj works best as a stop on a longer North Bengal journey, or as a base for a day or two of birdwatching. It is far from the main tourist circuits: about 181 km from Siliguri and 425 km from Kolkata by road. Facilities are basic, so plan hotels, transport and medicines in advance, and bring binoculars.
