Before you go
Raiganj with elderly parents: what to know
- The sanctuary is flat and close to town, but carry a folding stool or confirm seating, as benches are limited.
- Visit in the early morning or late afternoon; midday heat and sun are tiring from March to October.
- Carry water, snacks and any medicines. Facilities are basic outside Raiganj town.
- Use a hired car for the day rather than public transport, so you can rest when needed.
- Winter weekends can be crowded with picnic parties near the sanctuary, so go on a weekday.
- Plan the long journey from Siliguri or Kolkata carefully; the town is about 181 km from Siliguri and 425 km from Kolkata.

Practical tips for Raiganj
- Best hours for the birds. Go within the first two hours after sunrise or in the late afternoon, when birds are active and the light is soft. Midday is hot and quiet.
- Getting around. Autos and e-rickshaws serve the town. For the sanctuary, Bahin and Karnajora, a hired car for the day is more comfortable and lets you adjust the plan.
- Weekend crowds. Winter weekends bring picnic parties to the sanctuary, which disturb the birds and crowd the paths. A weekday visit is calmer.
- Binoculars and camera. Bring binoculars. The heronry is best seen from the lodge's observatory and the edges, so a zoom lens helps. Do not use flash near nests.
- Monsoon. June to September brings heavy rain and humidity. The nesting colony is busy then, but paths can be muddy and mosquitoes are a nuisance.
- Money. Carry cash for entry fees, food and small purchases. ATMs are available in Raiganj town but not near the sights.
- Heat. April and May are very hot, with mean daily highs near 38 degrees C. Schedule visits for early morning and rest through the afternoon.
- Facilities. Toilets and food near the sights are basic. Carry water, snacks and any medicines you need.
