Plan 01

1 day in Raipur

  1. 01

Day 1: Old city and a lake at dusk

Begin at Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum when it opens, since it gives the clearest introduction to the region. Visit Mahamaya Temple and Kankali Talab in the older part of the city, then Dudhadhari Math if time allows. Rest through the early afternoon, then spend the evening at Vivekananda Sarovar or Telibandha Lake for a walk and a snack.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum1 to 1.5 hoursEasyMorning, on a weekday; October to February for comfortable walking between sights
Dudhadhari Math45 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening aarti; around festivals such as Ram Navami the temple is very busy
Telibandha Lake (Marine Drive)1 to 1.5 hoursEasyEvening, October to February

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Raipur

  1. 01

Day 1: Museum and old-city temples

Start at the museum, then move to Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple on the Kharun river and the old-city temples of Mahamaya, Kankali Talab and Dudhadhari Math. Keep a break in the afternoon and end at Vivekananda Sarovar.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple1 hourEasyEarly morning; Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan are very crowded
Dudhadhari Math45 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening aarti; around festivals such as Ram Navami the temple is very busy

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Naya Raipur

Go early to Nandanvan Jungle Safari and spend the morning on the safaris and zoo. After lunch and rest, visit Purkhouti Muktangan in the cooler part of the afternoon, then finish with a stroll at Telibandha Lake.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Purkhouti Muktangan2 hoursModerateEarly morning or late afternoon, November to February
Telibandha Lake (Marine Drive)1 to 1.5 hoursEasyEvening, October to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Purkhouti Muktangan: Paths are paved and mostly level, but the park is large and open, so shade and seating are limited at midday. Ask whether a battery vehicle is available if walking is a concern, and carry water and a hat.

    Day 2: Sirpur

Leave early with a car and driver for Sirpur, about 80 km away, to see the brick Lakshmana temple and the excavated Buddhist sites. Carry water and expect uneven ground; return in the late afternoon.

  3. 03

Day 3: Naya Raipur or Rajim

Choose between Nandanvan and Purkhouti Muktangan in Naya Raipur, or a river-and-temple half-day at Rajim, with Hatkeshwar Mahadev on the way back.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Raipur trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main sight per morning and rest after lunch; Raipur's heat from March to June is severe.
  • The museum, Mahamaya Temple, Kankali Talab and Dudhadhari Math are the easiest sights for limited mobility, with short, mostly level walks.
  • Naya Raipur sights are spread out: ask about battery vehicles at the parks and use a car between them.
  • Sirpur and Rajim involve long drives and uneven ground; choose one and travel with a driver.
  • Remove footwear at temples; carry socks or ask about mats, as stone floors can be hot at midday.
  • Drink bottled water and avoid raw street food if your stomach is sensitive.
