Raipur is the capital of Chhattisgarh, a state carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000, and it works as a gateway to central India more than as a showpiece city. The old town grew around tanks and temples, traditionally credited to the Kalachuri ruler Brahmadeo Rai in the late 14th century, while the newer Naya Raipur to the south-east is a planned administrative capital with wide roads, parks and a safari. The city had just over a million residents at the 2011 census.
The visit rewards a measured approach. Spend a morning on the old city: Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum for the region's sculpture and tribal art, then Mahamaya Temple, Kankali Talab and Dudhadhari Math, all within the older quarters, followed by an evening on a lake such as Telibandha. A second day suits Naya Raipur, where Purkhouti Muktangan and Nandanvan Jungle Safari sit about 20 to 35 km from the centre.
Raipur is also the practical base for the state's older monuments. Rajim, at a river confluence about 45 to 50 km away, and Sirpur, a site of brick temples and Buddhist monasteries roughly 80 km away, each fill a day. Summer is severe, so travel between November and February if you can. The city is easy for older travellers who use a car and driver, avoid midday and keep expectations realistic: it is a quiet, local place rather than a heritage showpiece.
