The short answer

Nandanvan Zoo and Jungle Safari: what visitors should know first

Worth a half-day if you want wildlife without leaving the city region. Go at opening time, choose the safaris deliberately, and check current timings, ticket rules and any closure days locally.

History and context

The story behind Nandanvan Zoo and Jungle Safari

The Naya Raipur Development Authority proposed the safari in 2011 and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 November 2016. The zoo section was opened later. According to the Central Zoo Authority the grounds cover 320.15 hectares, and tourism material describes about 800 acres.

The four safaris are for herbivores (about 30 hectares), lions, tigers and bears (about 20 hectares each).

Why it matters

Why Nandanvan Zoo and Jungle Safari is worth your time

Nandanvan matters because it makes wildlife viewing practical for people who cannot manage a multi-day jungle trip. Inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 1 November 2016, with the zoo section opening later, it is classed by the Central Zoo Authority as a medium zoo and has been planted out with tens of thousands of saplings to create a green belt on formerly open land.

It is not a wild forest, and fences are part of the experience. But for children, for older travellers and for anyone with a few hours before a flight, it is an uncomplicated way to see big cats and Indian herbivores at close range. Chhattisgarh's real jungles, such as Udanti and Indravati, need days and permits; this is the quick alternative.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Decide in advance which part you want. The grounds cover about 320 hectares, of which the zoo is roughly 50, while the four safari enclosures for herbivores, bears, tigers and lions are fenced areas you cross in a vehicle. Start with the safari on a cool morning, when animals are more likely to be active.

The herbivore safari is the easiest to enjoy, since chital, sambar, nilgai, barking deer and blackbuck are often visible from the vehicle. Tigers and bears are usually harder to see, so do not plan the trip around a single sighting. Keep windows closed as instructed and listen to the driver.

After the safari, walk the zoo section at a gentle pace and rest in the shade. A reservoir within the grounds attracts migratory birds in the cooler months, which is worth a look if you have binoculars. Pair the trip with Purkhouti Muktangan only if you start early; otherwise split them across two days.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrive at opening time
  • Check the weekly closure and booking method
  • Carry water, hat and sun protection
  • Do not expect guaranteed big-cat sightings
