Sirpur travel guide

A quiet Mahanadi village that was once a capital: brick temples, Buddhist monasteries and open ruins, best seen on an unhurried winter day.

Sirpur is a small village on the Mahanadi in Mahasamund district, about 78 km from Raipur. It is called Shripura in old inscriptions, and between roughly the 5th and 12th centuries it was an important city, the capital of the Sharabhapuriya and later the Panduvamshi kings of Dakshina Kosala. Today the scale of that city is easy to miss, because most of it lies under fields, mounds and village lanes.

What you can see is remarkable. The Lakshmana temple, dated by the ASI to the 7th century, is a rare standing brick temple, with a carved stone doorway to the sanctum. Around it are the ruins of a Rama temple and the Tivardev monastery, with the Surang Tila temple platform, the Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar and the Baleshwar group a short drive away. Shaiva, Vaishnava, Buddhist and Jain remains share the site.

Sirpur is a place for a slow day, not a checklist. Visit in the cooler months, start early, and choose a few monuments rather than every mound. There is little lodging in the village, so most travellers stay in Raipur or Mahasamund and come out by car. The sites are spread out, shade is limited, and facilities are basic, so plan water, snacks and rest stops.

It is also a rewarding stop for older travellers who like history and do not mind uneven ground. The Lakshmana temple compound, the museum and the Gandheshwar temple on the river are the easiest parts, while Surang Tila involves steps. In winter, a dance and music festival is staged at the Lakshmana temple, which adds a reason to time your trip around it.

What and where to eat in Sirpur.

Food to try in Sirpur

Food and restaurants

Sirpur is a village, and the food is simple. Expect basic roadside eateries and tea stalls rather than restaurants, so it is best to have a proper meal in Raipur or Mahasamund before or after your visit. Carry water, fruit and packaged snacks for the day.

Chhattisgarhi home cooking is mostly rice-based, with dishes such as chila, a savoury rice-flour pancake. Check with your driver or hotel for a trusted place to eat on the way, and stick to bottled or filtered water.

Shopping in Sirpur

Shopping

There is no shopping scene at Sirpur itself. The village has a few small shops for water, snacks and basic items. Raipur is the place to look for Chhattisgarh handicrafts and textiles on the way back, as the village offers little beyond what you need for the day.

If you see local handmade items at the festival season, buy from the maker and carry small cash, as card and UPI coverage may be patchy.

Choose without overthinking

Which Sirpur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Day trip from Raipur or an overnight near Sirpur?

A day trip from Raipur is simpler, with better hotels and food, but it means about three to four hours on the road. Staying overnight in Mahasamund or at Sirpur cuts the driving and lets you see the site in softer light, though choices are limited.

Lakshmana temple or Surang Tila first?

Start with the Lakshmana temple compound if energy or time is short: it is level, has the museum and other ruins nearby. Choose Surang Tila first if you are fit and want the best light and view, since it involves steps.

Buddhist viharas or Hindu temples?

The Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar and Tivardev are the best for Buddhist heritage and sculpture. The Lakshmana temple and Baleshwar group suit those more interested in temple architecture. A full day lets you see both.

Normal day or the festival?

A normal day is quieter and easier for older travellers. The dance festival adds performances at the Lakshmana temple, but needs advance planning for rooms and transport.

Sirpur travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat

April to June is very hot, and the site has little shade. Even in winter, plan to be done with the main walking by late morning.

  2. 02

    Getting around

Hire a car with a driver for the day, as the monument groups are spread over several kilometres and local transport is limited.

  3. 03

    Walking

Ground is uneven at the ruins, and Surang Tila has stone steps. Wear closed shoes with grip.

  4. 04

    Money

Carry cash for tickets, tea and small purchases; card and UPI coverage in the village may be unreliable.

  5. 05

    Food and water

Eat in Raipur or Mahasamund when you can, and carry bottled water and snacks for the day.

  6. 06

    Tickets and hours

Some monuments are ticketed ASI sites and fees and hours change, so check at the counter on arrival. The counter can be slow.

  7. 07

    Temple etiquette

The Gandheshwar temple is in active use, so dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear.

  8. 08

    Monsoon

Rain and mud make the ruins slippery, and roads can slow down. If you travel then, allow extra time.

Sirpur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Start from Raipur early and keep the full day for Sirpur alone; the road time is the long part.
  • Begin with the level Lakshmana temple compound, museum and Gandheshwar temple. Treat Surang Tila as optional if steps are a problem.
