Before you go
Sirpur with elderly parents: what to know
- Start from Raipur early and keep the full day for Sirpur alone; the road time is the long part.
- Begin with the level Lakshmana temple compound, museum and Gandheshwar temple. Treat Surang Tila as optional if steps are a problem.
- Hire a car for the whole day and ask the driver to wait at each group, because distances between them are long on foot.
- Carry water, a hat, snacks and any medicines; shade, seating and shops are limited.
- Wear shoes with a good grip; ground around the ruins is uneven.
- The nearest large hospitals are in Raipur, so carry a basic first-aid kit.
Easiest first
Places in Sirpur sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (9)
- Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — A flat site with open ground and low walls. Little shade, so carry water and a hat.
- Baleshwar Mahadev Temples (Places to visit · 30 to 40 minutes) — Open, mostly level ground with low ruins. There is little shade or seating.
- Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 3 to 5 hours for a safari; a full day including the drive) — Safaris are done sitting in a forest-department jeep, so there is no walking, but the tracks are rough and dusty and the seats are hard. Getting into a high jeep can be awkward, and there are few facilities inside the forest.
- Gandheshwar Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 60 minutes) — A short walk from the temple down to the river, with some steps and uneven ground. Shade from banyan trees makes it the most restful stop at Sirpur.
- Lakshmana Temple, Sirpur (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — The compound is a lawn with level paths and a short walk from the gate. Shade is limited and benches are few, but this is the easiest stop at Sirpur.
- Rama Temple, Sirpur (Places to visit · 15 to 20 minutes) — A short walk on level ground from the Lakshmana temple. Little shade.
- Sirpur ASI Museum (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — It is indoors, level and close to the Lakshmana temple, so it works as a cool break. Lighting and labelling are modest.
- Sirpur Dance and Music Festival (Culture and craft · Evening sessions across three days) — Seating is arranged on the lawn, and evenings can be cool. The long transfer from Raipur after dark is the main difficulty.
- Tivardev Vihara (Places to visit · 30 to 40 minutes) — Open, mostly level ground, with some uneven brickwork. Limited shade and seating.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Sirpur Archaeological Site (Places to visit · Half a day for the highlights; a full day with the viharas and river) — Monuments are spread over several kilometres, so a car between stops is essential. Ground is uneven, shade and benches are limited, and the sun is strong by late morning.
- Surang Tila (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — Stone steps lead to the platform, with uneven stones and no handrails at some points. The base and the pillared approach can be enjoyed without climbing.

Practical tips for Sirpur
- Heat. April to June is very hot, and the site has little shade. Even in winter, plan to be done with the main walking by late morning.
- Getting around. Hire a car with a driver for the day, as the monument groups are spread over several kilometres and local transport is limited.
- Walking. Ground is uneven at the ruins, and Surang Tila has stone steps. Wear closed shoes with grip.
- Money. Carry cash for tickets, tea and small purchases; card and UPI coverage in the village may be unreliable.
- Food and water. Eat in Raipur or Mahasamund when you can, and carry bottled water and snacks for the day.
- Tickets and hours. Some monuments are ticketed ASI sites and fees and hours change, so check at the counter on arrival. The counter can be slow.
- Temple etiquette. The Gandheshwar temple is in active use, so dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear.
- Monsoon. Rain and mud make the ruins slippery, and roads can slow down. If you travel then, allow extra time.
