Why it matters

Why Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Memorial, Peikarumbu is worth your time

Abdul Kalam was born in Rameswaram and rose to become a missile scientist and India's 11th President. The memorial at Peikarumbu, close to his hometown, is a national tribute to him and a reminder that this island produced one of modern India's best-loved public figures.

The complex is as much a science exhibit as a memorial. Its focus on children, scientists and motivation reflects Kalam's own interest in young people and technology. For travellers on the Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram road it offers a calm, educational change from temples, and children in particular tend to enjoy the missile replicas, the paintings and the open garden walks, which make a good break in a long day of travel.

How to experience it

The memorial opened in July 2017 and was designed by DRDO. You approach a complex in a blend of Mughal and Indian styles. A 45-foot replica of the Agni missile stands at the front, and the main entrance is modelled on India Gate, with Chettinad-style wooden doors.

Inside, four exhibition halls of about 2,500 square feet each are themed around children, scientists, motivation and lectures. They hold rocket and missile replicas, about 900 paintings and murals, and around 200 photographs. A bronze statue of Kalam playing the veena sits beneath the main dome. His grave is in a circular chamber at the northern end of the complex, and the grounds are landscaped in Mughal garden style.

Go in the morning, walk the halls first and visit the grave quietly. It is a good stop with children and school groups, and it lies on the road between Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram.
