Rampur is a small city in Uttar Pradesh's Rohilkhand region, between Moradabad and Bareilly. For nearly two centuries it was the capital of a princely state: the Rohilla state was founded in 1774 by Nawab Faizullah Khan, stayed under British protection and merged into India on 1 July 1949. The Nawabs left a distinct culture of scholarship, calligraphy and cooking.

The heart of a visit is the Qila Mualla, the walled fort compound in the centre of town. Inside, the Nawabs' Hamid Manzil palace houses the Raza Library, one of the notable manuscript collections in India. Beside the fort stands the Jama Masjid, begun in 1775, with three domes and four minarets, and the surrounding lanes are the best place to see everyday Rampur.

Rampur also has a craft and food identity. Rampuri cuisine is a branch of Mughlai cooking, and the town's name was once tied to the Rampuri knife, now restricted. It is a short, quiet destination rather than a resort, best as a day trip from Bareilly or Moradabad or as a stop between Delhi and Kumaon. Come for the library and the old town, and keep expectations simple.

Rampuri cuisine is a branch of Mughlai cooking from the Nawabs' kitchens. Notable dishes include Rampuri fish, chicken changezi, pasande haleem, doodhiya biryani (cooked with milk), shami kebabs and sohan or habshi halwa. Local food writing names Nahid's Chicken Corner and Karim's Food among eateries, but quality changes, so ask locally.

Sweets are a highlight: habshi halwa is dense, dark and made with wheat, milk, ghee and sugar. Choose busy places, ask for less spice if needed and drink bottled water.

Shopping in Rampur

Rampur's craft identity is mixed. The Rampuri knife, or chaaku, was the best-known product, but the Uttar Pradesh government banned making blades longer than 4.5 inches in the mid-1990s, and the trade declined. A few shops in Safdarganj Bazaar, behind the Jama Masjid, still sell small knives and sharpening tools. Abbas Market is known for appliqué work on dupattas and suits, and kite-making, zardozi and cap-making survive as local crafts. Prices are negotiable in bazaar shops; check what you can carry on a journey.

One District One Product

Rampuri knife (chaaku)

Rampur is known for the Rampuri knife, first made by royal bladesmiths under the Nawabs. The state restricted blades longer than 4.5 inches in the mid-1990s, so the trade is much smaller now. Buy only legal, small items and keep to local rules.

Choose without overthinking

Which Rampur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Raza Library or the Jama Masjid, if you have limited time?

Choose the library: it is the reason to visit and an indoor sight. The Jama Masjid is next door and takes under an hour, so most visitors can do both.

Rampur as a day trip or an overnight stop?

A day trip from Moradabad or Bareilly works. Stay overnight if you want the old town in the evening, or want to add Ahichhatra the next day.

Old-town food or a hotel restaurant?

Old-town places give the real Rampuri flavours but vary in hygiene. A hotel restaurant is steadier but plainer. A mix of both is practical for seniors.
