The story behind Ahichhatra (Ahichchhatra) Archaeological Site and Jain Tirth
Jain tradition links Ahichhatra with the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha, and says Parshvanatha attained omniscience there. Why it matters
Why Ahichhatra (Ahichchhatra) Archaeological Site and Jain Tirth is worth your time
Ahichhatra is among the earliest known city sites in this part of the plains, and it features in Jain, Hindu and Buddhist traditions alike. Excavations found nine layers of settlement, the earliest from before the 3rd century BCE and the latest from the 11th century CE.
For a traveller in Rampur it shows how deep the layers of the region go: older than the Nawabs, older than the Mughals, and tied to the story of a kingdom named in the epics.

How to experience it
Ahichhatra lies near the village of Ramnagar in Aonla tehsil, Bareilly district, and is about 55 km from Bareilly. Hire a car and driver from Rampur or Bareilly, because public connections to Ramnagar are limited. The nearest railway station is Revati Bahoda Khera, from which vehicles run to Ramnagar.
The site is the ancient capital of northern Panchala, a kingdom named in the Mahabharata, with remains from the early historic period through to the Gupta era. Walk the mound with a local guide if possible, and imagine the brick fortifications and stupas that excavation has revealed. Most of the finds are held in museums, so the site itself is quiet.
The Jain temple complex nearby is the main draw for pilgrims. Dress modestly, remove shoes and ask before photographing. The Ahichhatra Jain Mela is held annually in March and is very crowded.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
