Day 1: Hill, garden and museum
Start at Pahari Mandir early, before the steps get hot, and climb as far as is comfortable for the view. Have a local breakfast of dhuska or chilka roti, then drive to the State Museum at Hotwar for the tribal galleries. After lunch and a rest, head to Rock Garden on Kanke Road for late-afternoon light and the view over Kanke Dam. End with a short walk in Nakshatra Van if it is open and you still have energy.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Pahari Mandir (Ranchi Hill) About 1.5 hours Demanding Early morning or late afternoon, October to February; avoid the Mondays of Shravan Nakshatra Van About 1 hour Easy Early morning or evening, October to March Pace: Pahari Mandir (Ranchi Hill) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Pahari Mandir (Ranchi Hill): The climb is a long flight of roughly 468 steps with railings but little shade, so it is hard going for people with knee, heart or breathing problems. There are landings on the way where you can sit. Anyone who cannot climb can still enjoy the setting from the lower approach and wait for the group.

Day 1: City temples and viewpoints
Begin with Pahari Mandir in the cool of the morning, then see Tagore Hill, which is a short climb with a quiet viewpoint. After lunch, visit the State Museum at Hotwar for its tribal and sculpture galleries. In the late afternoon, drive to Jagannath Temple at Dhurwa, which can be reached by road if the staircase is too much.

With parents at Tagore Hill (Morabadi Hill): The hill has a stepped path of moderate length, with some uneven and exposed sections. Seating is limited and there is little shade, so it suits older travellers who walk comfortably. The surrounding road is easy to reach by car, and you can enjoy the setting from the base if you do not want to climb.

Day 2: Waterfalls and the Sun Temple
Leave early with a car and driver along the Ranchi-Jamshedpur road to Dassam Falls, then continue to the Sun Temple near Bundu. Return for a late lunch. If you want a waterfall that is more dramatic, swap in Hundru Falls on a different road, but do not try to do all three falls in one day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Dassam Falls 1 to 1.5 hours at the falls Moderate August to November Hundru Falls 3 to 4 hours including travel Demanding August to November; the falls shrink in the dry season Pace: Hundru Falls involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Dassam Falls: The viewing area involves some steps and uneven rock. The water is hazardous, and older visitors should stay at the main viewpoint. There is limited seating and shade, so take care in the heat.
With parents at Hundru Falls: Reaching the base involves a long descent over steps and rocks, which are slippery in the monsoon. Older visitors or anyone with knee trouble should stay at the upper viewpoints. Shade and seating are limited, and monsoon crowds can be dense.

Day 2: Hundru and the Birsa zoo
Drive out to Hundru Falls in the morning, taking the viewpoints first and descending only if the steps are dry and you are fit. Lunch on the way back, then visit Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park at Ormanjhi for the afternoon, remembering that it is closed on Mondays.

Day 3: Bundu and Jonha
Go early to Dassam Falls and the Sun Temple on the Bundu road, then return for lunch. In the afternoon, if energy allows, visit Jonha Falls on the Ranchi-Purulia road, or finish with Jagannath Temple at Dhurwa, which is a gentler choice.

With parents at Jonha Falls (Gautamdhara): The approach involves roughly 722 steps down and up, which is a hard climb for anyone with heart, knee or breathing issues. A viewing point reportedly exists near the resort that avoids the full staircase. Shade is patchy and the steps are wet in the monsoon.

Pacing
Pacing a Ranchi trip for parents and children
- Do Pahari Mandir at dawn and treat the 468 steps as optional; the view from the lower landings is still worthwhile.
- Choose waterfall viewpoints over the base. Jonha has roughly 722 steps, and Hundru's descent is steep and slippery in the monsoon.
- Hire a car and driver for the day trips; roads to the falls are rural and distances add up.
- Rock Garden, Nakshatra Van, the State Museum and the Sun Temple are the easiest sights for limited mobility.
- Visit between November and February; the city is dry and comfortable, while June to September is wet and slippery.
- Weather: Ranchi's plateau climate is milder than the plains, but April and May are hot and June to September bring heavy rain. Plan outdoor sights early in the day.
