Ranebennur is a trading town in Haveri district, in the middle of Karnataka at about 605 m above sea level. Agriculture drives it: cotton and jowar are the main crops, and the town has a large commodity market, seed industry and a well-known wholesale cloth market.

The reason to stop is the Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary, declared in 1974 and about 119 sq km of grassland and scrub close to town. Between October and March the herds are easy to find at dawn and dusk, and the bird list is good.

Beyond it the district offers quieter heritage: the Hoysala Harihareshwara temple at Harihar across the Tungabhadra, the Later Chalukyan Siddheshwara temple at Haveri, and the ruined fort and Nagareshwara temple at Bankapura.

This is not a resort destination. Visitors are mostly passing through on the national highway or on a family trip, and facilities are simple. A sensible plan is a night in town, an early morning in the sanctuary, and a day of temples.

What and where to eat in Ranebennur.

Food to try in Ranebennur

Food and restaurants

Food in Ranebennur is the simple cooking of north-central Karnataka: jowar rotti with spicy side dishes, South Indian breakfasts and local meals in modest hotels. Haveri district is known for Byadagi red chillies, which shape the cooking's heat. There is no restaurant scene to plan around, so eat where locals do and ask for milder food if needed. Ask for jowar rotti with ennegai or a plain thali if the chilli heat is too much.

Harihar or Haveri for temples?

Harihar has the larger Hoysala hall and a river setting; Haveri's Siddheshwara temple is smaller, with Later Chalukyan towers.
