Why it matters
Why Ranibennur Blackbuck Sanctuary is worth your time
The sanctuary protects one of the larger surviving blackbuck populations in Karnataka, in a landscape of dry grass and scrub that has shrunk across the Deccan as farmland has expanded. A census in 2005 counted more than 6,000 blackbuck.
It is also the most distinctive reason to stop in Ranebennur, a farm-trade town that otherwise sits on the highway between Bengaluru and Hubballi. A short drive takes you from cotton and jowar fields into one of the few places where the native grassland antelope is still a common sight.

How to experience it
The sanctuary is open scrubland and grass, split into an eastern and a western portion, with the tourism zone in the buffer. Blackbuck are best seen in the cooler hours, when the herds graze in the open; at midday they shelter and the heat is hard going. Drive or walk slowly and keep voices low, since the animals are wary.
A forest rest house stands on the boundary at Gangajala. Beyond that, facilities are minimal, so carry water and snacks, and bring binoculars. The birdlife is good: peafowl, bay-backed shrike, black drongo, red-wattled lapwing and large grey babblers are among the recorded species, and wolves, jackals, foxes and Bengal monitors also live here though they are seldom seen.
The great Indian bustard was once reported here, but it has not been confidently seen for many years and may be locally extinct. Do not plan the trip around it. Combine the sanctuary with a morning in Ranebennur or a stop at Haveri on the road back.
