The short answer

Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go if you like forest walks, birds and quiet landscapes and accept that bears are shy and mostly nocturnal. Base yourself at the Kanjeta camp, start early, keep expectations modest and book lodging ahead through Gujarat Tourism or the forest office.

History and context

The story behind Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Ratanmahal was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1982 and covers about 55.65 square kilometres in Dahod district, close to Devgadh Baria and the tribal areas of Baria and Chhota Udepur. It lies in the Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion.

Besides sloth bears, the sanctuary supports Indian leopard, striped hyena, golden jackal, four-horned antelope and hanuman langur. A tiger has been recorded here in recent years, but this is not something visitors should expect.

Why it matters

Why Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary is worth your time

Ratanmahal protects a small piece of the western edge of the Vindhya range, the part of Gujarat where dry deciduous forest meets Madhya Pradesh. Teak grows in the foothills, mixed woodland covers the slopes and bamboo lines the edges. Mahua trees are plentiful, and their flowers and fruit help feed the sloth bears that give the sanctuary its reputation.

For a state famous for Gir lions and desert wildlife, it offers a different, quieter kind of wildlife visit. It is also the source of the Panam river, so the forest matters for local water and for the tribal villages around it. Visiting thoughtfully, with local guides and registered operators, supports the eco-tourism committee that runs the camps and helps keep the forest valuable to the people who live beside it.

The climb by four-wheel-drive ends with a view across to villages in Madhya Pradesh.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Begin at the Kanjeta orientation centre, which Gujarat Tourism recommends visiting first. The exhibition explains the sanctuary's wildlife and forest types and makes the rest of the day more meaningful, especially for children. From there you can take the nature trail, visit the machaans, which are raised platforms for watching the landscape and animals, and, if the road is open, go up the hill by four-wheel-drive or a local vehicle booked from Baria Kanjeta. At the end of the hill walk the view extends over villages on the Madhya Pradesh side.

Sloth bears are active mainly at night and sightings are unusual, so aim for the early morning and the hour before dusk, when birds and other animals are most active. Panthers, jungle cats, civets, jackals, hyenas, honey badgers, foxes and porcupines are also recorded here, and birdwatchers can look for treepies, drongos, paradise flycatchers and black-headed orioles. Move quietly, keep a safe distance and do not stray from marked trails or guides.

Treat the trip as a forest stay, not a safari with timings. Pair it with Naldha for the waterfall walk, or with the Bavka temple on the way back to Dahod, and bring water, food arrangements and cash because shops are few.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book Kanjeta or Naldha lodging before you travel
  • Confirm road conditions and vehicle rules for the hill
  • Carry water, snacks, sun protection and a first-aid kit
  • Follow guide instructions and keep to marked trails
  • Avoid driving in the forest after dark
