Ratanmahal travel guide

A dry-deciduous forest on the Madhya Pradesh border, where sloth bears, seasonal waterfalls and tribal villages replace the usual Gujarat circuit.

Ratanmahal is not a town but a forested range on the eastern edge of Gujarat, in Dahod district, close to the Madhya Pradesh border. It is protected as the Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary, notified in 1982 and covering roughly 55 square kilometres of teak, bamboo and mahua woodland. It is best known as the state's main refuge for the sloth bear, and the sanctuary is often called the Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary for that reason.

The country around it is tribal Gujarat, with Bhil and other communities farming the foothills and the Panam river rising within the sanctuary. The nearest towns are Devgadh Baria, a former princely-state capital, and Dahod, the district headquarters and a railway junction. Neither is a tourist centre, and that is much of the appeal: this is a quiet, unhurried corner where the visit is the forest itself.

Two forest-department eco-camps, at Kanjeta and Naldha, are the practical bases. Kanjeta has an orientation centre, cottages, tents and viewing platforms, while Naldha is known for a monsoon-season waterfall reached by an easy forest walk. Away from the forest, the 12th to 13th century Shiva temple at Bavka, near Dahod, adds an architectural stop.

Facilities are basic and distances are long, so Ratanmahal suits families and senior travellers who like nature and can accept simple lodging and rough roads. Plan it as a one- or two-night trip with a vehicle and driver, book camps through Gujarat Tourism or the forest office in advance, and treat bear sightings as a bonus, not a promise.

How many days do you have?

Ratanmahal itinerary

One good day

1 day in Ratanmahal

Leave Dahod or Devgadh Baria early so you reach the Kanjeta orientation centre in the morning and see the exhibition first. Take the nature trail and, if the road allows, a vehicle up the hill for the view over the Madhya Pradesh side. Eat at the camp if you have arranged food in advance, rest through the hot middle of the day, then use the late afternoon for a short walk or a viewing platform. Start back before dark; forest roads are not pleasant at night and sightings are never guaranteed.

Day-by-day plan →

Two days

2 days in Ratanmahal

Arrive at Kanjeta by late morning, check in to your cottage or tent and visit the orientation centre. Walk the nature trail in the afternoon, then sit at a machaan near dusk for birds and any movement in the forest. After dinner at the camp, spend time at the campfire area where permitted.

Day-by-day plan →

Three unhurried days

3 days in Ratanmahal

Reach Dahod in the morning, visit the Shiva temple at Bavka while the light is soft, then continue towards the sanctuary. Settle at Kanjeta before dusk.

Food to try in Ratanmahal

Food and restaurants

There are no restaurant scenes in Ratanmahal. At Kanjeta, vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are arranged through the local Eco Tourism Committee, so tell the camp in advance how many are coming. Near Naldha, a private dhaba in front of the campsite serves simple meals if told beforehand. Dahod and Devgadh Baria have ordinary Gujarati eateries and tea stalls, where dal, rotla or bhakri, vegetables and seasonal local fare are typical. Carry water, fruit and biscuits for the drive, and do not count on anything open late.

Shopping in Ratanmahal

Shopping

Shopping is minimal. Dahod and Devgadh Baria have everyday markets for supplies, and tribal villages in the area sell farm produce, including mahua-season goods, but there is no craft street or souvenir circuit to plan around. Buy any essentials, medicines and snacks in Dahod or Baria before heading to the forest, and do not remove plants, insects or anything else from the sanctuary.

Choose without overthinking

Which Ratanmahal experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Kanjeta or Naldha for a first visit?

Choose Kanjeta if you want an orientation centre, cottages, viewing platforms and an easy base for wildlife watching. Choose Naldha if the seasonal waterfall walk is the draw and you are happy with basic tent camping. Many visitors combine them across two days.

Stay in the sanctuary or base yourself in Dahod?

Staying at a camp puts you in the forest at dawn and dusk, which is when animals are active, but facilities are simple. Dahod has proper hotels, trains and shops, at the cost of a long daily drive to the forest.

Monsoon or winter?

Monsoon, from July, brings green forest and flowing waterfalls but slippery paths and tricky roads. Winter, from November to February, is cooler and easier on knees and cars, though waterfalls will have thinned.

Ratanmahal or Bavka Shiva temple?

They are different trips. Ratanmahal is about forest, walking and nature; Bavka is a short stop for sculpture and ruins near Dahod. If time is short, see Bavka on the way and give the forest a full day.

  2. 02

    Booking

Camps are run through the forest department and Gujarat Tourism. Book ahead, confirm what is included and ask about entry arrangements; fees and hours are not published.

  4. 04

Ratanmahal with elderly parents: what to know

  • Treat this as an outdoor trip with long road stretches: expect around two to three hours from Dahod, and more from Vadodara.
  • Ask Gujarat Tourism or the forest office about the road to the hill before you go; the upper section may need a four-wheel-drive or local vehicle.

Useful answers

Ratanmahal FAQs

What is Ratanmahal known for?

Ratanmahal is known for its wildlife sanctuary in Dahod district, which has the highest sloth bear population in Gujarat. It also protects leopards, hyenas and many birds, and has seasonal waterfalls.

Will I see a sloth bear?

Not reliably. Sloth bears are shy and largely nocturnal. Visitors should treat the forest, the birds and the walks as the experience, and a bear sighting as a lucky extra.

What is the best time to visit Ratanmahal?

November to February is the most comfortable, and July to February is the usual season for the Naldha waterfall. April to June is very hot and rain makes the roads difficult in July and August.

How do I get to Ratanmahal?

Fly to Vadodara or take a train to Dahod or Godhra, then hire a car with a driver. The Kanjeta camp is roughly 55 to 70 km from Dahod and 30 to 40 km from Devgadh Baria.

Is Ratanmahal suitable for elderly parents?

With realistic expectations, yes for short stays: the drive is long and lodging is basic. Choose a cottage over a tent, keep walks short and confirm facilities with the camp in advance.
