Before you go

Ratanmahal with elderly parents: what to know

  • Treat this as an outdoor trip with long road stretches: expect around two to three hours from Dahod, and more from Vadodara.
  • Ask Gujarat Tourism or the forest office about the road to the hill before you go; the upper section may need a four-wheel-drive or local vehicle.
  • The camps are simple. Confirm cottage rather than tent, bathroom type, drinking water and food before booking.
  • Carry regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit, sun protection and plenty of water; medical help is not close to the camps.
  • Use a vehicle with a driver who knows the forest roads and avoid driving at night, when wildlife moves near the road.
  • Wear shoes with good grip and a rain jacket in the monsoon; paths to waterfalls are slippery.

Easiest first

Places in Ratanmahal sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Bavka Shiva Temple (Places of worship · About an hour) — The site is a low knoll with a short walk and uneven stone around the ruin. There is little shade or seating, and the approach roads are village roads, so go by car with a driver.
  • Devgadh Baria and its Rajmahal (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The town is flat and unhurried, with plenty of seating at tea stalls and short walks. Facilities are basic and roads are busy near the market, so a car and driver is the comfortable way.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Naldha Campsite and Waterfall Walk (Places to visit · Half a day; overnight possible) — The walk is described as easy to moderate on a marked forest trail of roughly 2.5 to 3 km, but there is little seating, the ground can be wet and slippery and the camp is basic. It suits fit seniors but not people with knee problems.
  • Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day to two days) — The sanctuary is rural, with long drives and uneven forest paths. The hill section may need a four-wheel-drive, shade and seating are limited, and medical facilities are far away. Older visitors do best with a cottage at Kanjeta, short trail walks and a driver who knows the roads.

Practical tips for Ratanmahal

  • Heat. April to June is very hot, with mean daily highs near 38 to 39 degrees Celsius at Dahod. Winter days are pleasant, but nights can be cool in the foothills.
  • Getting around. Hire a car with a driver from Vadodara, Godhra or Dahod. The Kanjeta hill section may need a four-wheel-drive or a local vehicle booked at Baria Kanjeta, so ask before you leave.
  • Booking. Camps are run through the forest department and Gujarat Tourism. Book ahead, confirm what is included and ask about entry arrangements; fees and hours are not published.
  • Walking. Trails are forest paths and the Naldha waterfall walk is roughly 2.5 to 3 km each way. Keep to marked trails, wear grip shoes and carry water.
  • Money. Carry cash for dhabas, tips and small purchases, as ATMs are limited close to the sanctuary. Fill up on fuel in Dahod or Devgadh Baria.
  • Dress. Wear light, neutral clothing and covered shoes. Bring a rain jacket in the monsoon, and a warm layer for winter evenings.
  • Rules and photography. No smoking, music, pets, weapons or flash photography are allowed. Do not feed or approach animals and do not remove plants or insects.
  • Safety. Sloth bears can be dangerous if surprised. Make normal noise on trails, do not walk at night, and follow guides' advice.
