Ravangla, also written Rabong, sits at roughly 2,100 metres (about 8,000 feet) in South Sikkim, on the road between Gangtok, Namchi and Pelling. It is a small market town rather than a resort: one main bazaar, a taxi stand, a scatter of hotels and homestays, and a ring of hills that fill with cloud by midday.

The reason to come is the cluster of sights within an hour's drive. Tathagata Tsal, the Buddha Park, puts a copper Buddha about 40 metres tall above the town. Ralang's monasteries lie below it, Kewzing's Bon monastery sits along the Legship road, and Temi Tea Garden, Tendong Hill and the Maenam forest fill out the rest. Few of these need more than an hour or two, which makes Ravangla easy to pace.

It works well for older travellers if you accept two things. Weather is changeable, so plan sights in the morning and keep afternoons flexible. And the roads are winding hill roads, so a private car and a driver who knows them is far more comfortable than shared jeeps. Two nights covers the main sights; three lets you add a day trip to Tashiding or Namchi.

It is also cold for much of the year. Pack layers even in spring, and treat monsoon months, with heavy rain and landslide risk on hill roads, as a time to avoid unless you have a flexible schedule.

What and where to eat in Ravangla.

Food to try in Ravangla

Food and restaurants

Food in Ravangla is simple and mostly found in small hotels and cafés: momos, thukpa, rice with dal and vegetables, and Tibetan and Chinese-style dishes. Small restaurants on the main road serve Tibetan dishes, momos and rice-and-curry meals; ask at your hotel for a current recommendation.

Many places stop serving dinner early, sometimes around 8 pm, so decide on dinner by evening. Cafés at Buddha Park serve tea, coffee, momos and noodles. Try local tea from Temi and, if you are offered it in a village, tongba, a warm millet drink. For older travellers, stick to freshly cooked, hot food and bottled or boiled water.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Ravangla

Shopping

Shopping is modest. Temi Tea Garden sells organic teas under its own brand, which is the most reliable local souvenir. Older guides mention a handicraft centre in Kewzing for wood carving and weaving, and a carpet centre in the Tibetan settlement, though both should be confirmed locally before you plan a trip around them. The main bazaar has shops for everyday needs, woollens and small souvenirs.

Carry some cash, as ATMs and card machines can be unreliable in small towns, and buy warm clothing in town if the weather turns colder than expected.

Choose without overthinking

Which Ravangla experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Buddha Park or Ralang Monastery, if you only have time for one?

Choose Buddha Park for the big statue, gardens and views, and an easy half-day. Choose Ralang if you would rather see an active monastery with chanting and paintings; it needs a winding drive but little walking.

Maenam Hill or Tendong Hill for a walk?

Maenam is the longer, steeper trek, through a wildlife sanctuary to a shrine at about 3,200 metres. Tendong is shorter, about 2.5 hours from Damthang, and a better first choice for moderately fit walkers.

Kewzing Bon monastery or Old Ralang Gompa?

Kewzing shows a different tradition, Bon, in a village setting. Old Ralang is a quiet 1768-era gompa that pairs naturally with New Ralang. If you are short of time, pick whichever lies on your route.

Tashiding or Namchi as a day trip?

Tashiding is a long drive to a historic hilltop monastery and suits pilgrims and history lovers. Namchi is closer and offers Hindu and Buddhist statues, so it fits a shorter, easier day.

Ravangla with elderly parents: what to know

  • Ravangla is at about 2,100 metres, so take it easy on the first day, drink water, and avoid long climbs until you have adjusted.
  • Travel by private car with a driver who knows hill roads; winding roads can cause motion sickness, so take tablets if you are prone to it.
