The short answer

History and context

The story behind Tashiding Monastery

Wikipedia says the monastery was founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing and extended in 1717 under the third Chogyal, Chakdor Namgyal; the infobox lists Guru Padmasambhava as founder, reflecting tradition.

The monastery is Nyingma and is known for the annual Bumchu festival on the 14th and 15th days of the first Tibetan month, usually in February or March, when a sacred vase is opened and its water level read for omens.

Why it matters

Why Tashiding Monastery is worth your time

Wikipedia says Tashiding was founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing, extended in 1717 under the third Chogyal, and belongs to the Nyingma school. It is widely regarded as one of Sikkim's holiest sites, and is part of the pilgrimage circuit that includes Pemayangtse, Dubdi and Khecheopalri Lake.

For visitors from Ravangla, it is the grandest day trip into West Sikkim, and a chance to see Sikkimese Buddhism at its most sacred and historic. It also rewards those who like landscapes: the hilltop setting is part of the experience.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan a full day, since Wikivoyage puts Tashiding about 39 kilometres from Ravangla and most taxis route via Legship. Start early. The monastery sits on a hill at around 1,465 metres between two rivers, with Kanchenjunga in the background on clear days.

Expect a walk and steps from the road or market to the hilltop, then a quiet circuit of the chortens and the main temple. The Thongwa Rangdol chorten, said in tradition to cleanse anyone who looks at it, is the best-known landmark. Walk clockwise round chortens and prayer walls, and keep voices low.

If you can plan your visit for February or March, the Bumchu festival is the major annual event, when lamas check the level of water in a sacred vase to read the year's omens, but it brings heavy crowds. Otherwise, a quiet day gives a better visit.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Leave early; the drive is about 39 km each way
  • Confirm access and festival crowds locally
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes where asked
  • Walk clockwise around chortens
  • Carry water and a warm layer
