Day 1: The fort and the town
Start at first light, before the heat, and walk up Rayadurgam Fort with a local guide or at least a local helper to find the caves and the Dashabhuja Ganapati. Allow two to three hours on the hill and carry water, because there is little shade. Return to town for lunch and rest through the afternoon. In the evening, walk through the older streets near the base of the hill, look at the town temples and the textile shops, and eat early.

Pacing
Pacing a Rayadurgam trip for parents and children
- The fort climb is over uneven rock and has little shade. Go at sunrise, take water, wear shoes with grip and turn back at the first sign of fatigue; the town itself has plenty to see at ground level.
- Fixed visitor facilities such as toilets, cafes and seating at the fort are not published, so assume none and carry what you need.
- Hire a car with driver for the day trips. Roads to Konakondla, Gooty and Kundurpi are long, and public transport links are infrequent.
- Carry cash in small notes, because small shops and stalls may not take digital payments reliably, and ATMs are fewer than in larger towns.
- Choose a room with air conditioning if you travel between March and June, when days are very hot.
- If a loved one cannot climb, the town's temples and the hill view from the ground still convey the setting of the fort.
