Yes for nature lovers and walkers, between October and March. This is a trekking and forest-edge visit, not a drive-through safari. Do not expect to see big cats; go for the lake, birds, orchids and quiet.

Why it matters

Why Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Mehao protects a sweep of forest from lowland evergreen through to temperate conifer, with the lake at its heart. It is one of the main reasons the Lower Dibang Valley appears on conservation maps, with species such as red panda, clouded leopard and a hoolock gibbon population.

For travellers it offers something rare in India: a wild forest edge without crowds, vehicles or touts. That also means no infrastructure, so it rewards people who like walking and quiet and who plan carefully.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Mehao as a day out of Roing, with a car to the lake approach and the rest on foot. The sanctuary is about 17 km from the town, and the best season is October to March, when trails are drier. The most popular option is a trek of roughly 12 km that takes 4 to 7 hours, which is long for casual walkers, so most visitors do only a stretch of it.

Ask the forest office in Roing about the current condition of the trail, whether a guide is advisable and what rules apply. Carry water, food, rain gear and leech protection in the damper months. There is no lodging inside the park, so you stay in Roing.

Expect forest and water rather than wildlife sightings. The sanctuary holds tigers, leopards, elephants, red pandas and hoolock gibbons, but they are rarely seen. The lake itself is clear and calm, with orchids and birds along the margins.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm entry and permit rules with the forest office
  • Carry water, food and rain gear
  • Start early to finish before dusk
  • Do not expect to see big cats; go for the lake and forest
  • Avoid the monsoon months
