Why it matters
Why Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
The sanctuary forms an important part of the Sambalpur elephant reserve and links forest corridors across western Odisha. It exists in tension with the highway that crosses it, and proposals have been made to realign the road. For visitors, that makes it an honest example of conservation next to development.
It will suit people who want to understand western Odisha's forests, not those expecting a safari park with fixed drives and tickets.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Badrama, also known as Ushakothi, lies on both sides of the Mumbai-Kolkata highway, so many travellers cross it without knowing. To visit properly, call the forest office at Badrama or the divisional office in Sambalpur beforehand. District tourism says permission comes from the Forest Range Officer at the entry village, and that visitors can look for wildlife from watchtowers.
The forest is mainly dry deciduous, with sal, and supports elephants, sambar, leopard and bison. A figure of tigers quoted in some sources is not an official count, so do not plan around one. Birdlife includes racket-tailed drongo, and flying squirrels are recorded.
Use daylight hours only. The sanctuary's own advice is to travel between 6 am and 6 pm because elephant accidents on the highway are common. A forest rest house with two rooms exists, booked through the divisional office.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
