Why it matters

Why Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Debrigarh is one of the few Odisha sanctuaries where forest and reservoir meet, so land and water species share the same landscape. It protects forest habitat for gaur, leopard and deer, along with a winter home for migratory waterfowl.

For a traveller, its value is in the quiet and the long water views, a counterpart to the busy dam only a short drive away. The state has also announced plans to upgrade eco-tourism there, so conditions may change; check before you go.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Reservoir boating

A boat on Hirakud shows the forest edge, islands and, in winter, waterfowl.

  2. 02

    Forest drive

A vehicle drive along the reservoir edge is the usual way to look for wildlife.

  3. 03

    Eco-camp stay

Cottages and a nature camp allow an overnight stay with advance booking.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Debrigarh as a managed visit, not a walk-in. Contact the forest authorities beforehand about entry, vehicles, boating and rooms; the usual entrance is reached from the right dyke of Hirakud via Dhodrokusum. From Sambalpur the drive takes the better part of an hour, and the final stretch is slower.

Inside, a vehicle drive along the reservoir edge is the main way to see the forest, and boat trips on the Hirakud water offer a very different view of shoreline and birds. Wildlife recorded here includes leopard, gaur, sambar, chital, chousingha, sloth bear and dhole, but sightings are never promised. Winter brings waterfowl, which makes the water more rewarding than the forest in some seasons.

The sanctuary has an eco-camp and cottages on the reservoir that need advance booking through the state eco-tourism channels. If you cannot stay, leave early and be back on the main road before dark. Treat any 20 km forest trek as an arrangement with guides only.
